![]() EDIT: Okay, tested out the demo of Shinobi. It's very good with the animations, art and attacks, but it doesn't feel like a Shinobi game yet. Maybe it's the fact that it's heavily based on combat attacks and no longer the darts you threw in prior games, where slashing was only a back up most times. You can still throw them, but much less focused on it and there are a lot of special combo inputs now for slash attacks. The demo is also extremely generous. I feel like I just played a full game almost. That's not something you want to offer gamers before a game is released if you really want them to buy the full game. I must have unlocked several power ups, completed a number of stages, and defeated a couple smaller bosses. Thank you for the demo, developers. Although now I think I'll be able to wait for a price drop on the main game having played this and really gotten a sense of the style. Only thing I don't like is all of the interruptions while playing with the text boxes. Thankfully you can skip them but it really cuts into the flow of the gameplay. And also not a fan of those health bars over every enemy. There should be a way to shut that nonsense off. I know the enemy is dead when they fall over or dissolve into a burst of smoke. I don't need a clumsy health bar above them unless they're a boss. Minor complaints aside, this is a quality game and they did a great job on it as far as an action game. Also check out the newly released Ninja Gaiden Ragebound for 24.99 available now, which also looks great. Last edited by Zivouhr; 08-01-2025 at 02:16 AM. |

Opening cutscene was way too long. Had to skip it.
I don't know how I should map it to my 8BitDo M30 Mega Drive-style controller. ![]() Gave up for now, falling back on a regular two-stick controller with the standard diamond face button arrangement. These character designs actually suck. ![]() Like that midriff is flattening through another dimension. ![]() From this angle, her midriff is teeny, and she has no hips because of it. |

Don't wanna proceed further until I get the controls worked out for this Mega Drive-style controller. I barely played the old games.
https://manuals.sega.com/genesismini...HINOBI_III.pdf So C is jump. But that's the original Mega Drive controller with only three buttons, and there are way more actions in this games. I'm assuming the old games had button combinations that they chose not to bring over because six buttons are no standard anymore. But Streets of Rage 4 had an option for the classic button combinations. This is what I came up with: A for heavy attack B for light attack C for jump X for kunai Y and Z for the ninja hook and glider L (left bumper) for ninja stance R (right bumper) for dash Gets confusing when the game wants to give me instructions and the glyphs are wrong. I'm guessing the upgrades are new for Shinobi. Argh... Last edited by Warm Gun; 08-03-2025 at 08:01 PM. |

Oh...
"Old games controls don't really apply as many where built on two, and the every game after up until DMC Shinobi had practically no melee-combat." Was confused as hell when I tried to play Shinobi III again a few minutes ago and couldn't melee. Is my controller being read correctly? |

Shinobi 3 has a 6-button control option hidden behind a code where there is a dedicated melee button. I think recent re-releases have it selectable in the option menu. |

Wish I could turn off the excessive tutorial pauses, partly because the glyphs are wrong and mostly because I'm confident that I can figure the game out without. Action games and most games in general should do everything possible to make themselves learnable without tutorials.
I will be buying it. Later, of course... Okay, when it had me press XYZ at the same time, the top row of the Mega Drive/M30 controller, for a special ninja art, I realized that I really can't play this with a classic style controller. Last edited by Warm Gun; 08-04-2025 at 12:37 AM. |

One big reason this doesn't feel like a Shinobi game is because there ARE way too many controls now. It's an advancement, so I won't hold it against this game, but was hoping for something more arcade like. This is good though, and has potential.
What I am missing is the spin jump where you can toss something like 8 darts out at one time. That was awesome. It's not in this game demo yet. Maybe the full game it'll unlock, but I didn't see any sign of it. That's one of the most classic moves in the original. The other factor is this is mostly about swordplay now. In the original games, the darts were primary and the sword was for close range when the darts ran out most times. I would call this more of a "Spiritual successor" more than a direct sequel to the Shinobi classic line of games. It's good though. I liked it overall. I hope the dog unlocks later on and can fetch enemies like in Genesis version of Shadow Dancer. That is my all time favorite Shinobi game, then Revenge of, then III, then 1. |
