That looks mostly faithful to the original Revenge of Shinobi game and Shinobi 3. Shinobi Shadow Dancer was way better on Genesis than the Arcade version.

Thanks, looks promising.

Good to see. The art style is more cartoon anime style than the original sprite drawn games. But looks like this Shinobi has a lot more moves to unleash against enemies.

I'm mostly a Revenge of Shinobi, Shinobi Shadow Dancer and Shinobi 3 fan. Shinobi 1 arcade is extra difficult so I don't remember completing that one yet.
Shinobi 3 is probably the "easiest" of all the series.

I wonder what happened to the Golden Axe reboot 3rd person game they were planning. No word since first announced.

Streets of Rage reboot too in 3rd person. Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, etc.

When do you think jet set radio will come?

I think it'll be ready late 2025 or 2026.
Golden Axe remake, maybe 2025 late.
Streets of Rage remake, 2026 for sure is my guess.
Crazy Taxi, probably 2025.
Shinobi remake, first out of the doors. It looks slightly generic like many platformers with the art style, losing some of the details and shading of the originals. That aside, it still looks artistically good, and is probably a great game. I'll buy it.

I'd like to see a classic arcades Sega collection, along with unreleased games like 18 Wheeler from Sega. I have a port on Dreamcast, but not sure how it compares to the arcade version. Fun game though.

Let's add Harley-Davidson & L.A. Riders to the hypothetical collection, it was a lot of fun. Also, Gunblade NY and L.A. Machineguns were released on Wii. Time for a remaster/remake/whatever for modern consoles.

Shinobi reboot August 29th is pretty much September 1st almost. That gives gamers interested in Mafia 4 plenty of time to play that release from August 8th 2025.

I hope the music is good like in the original too.
Can this Ninja do the double jump toss of about 8 shrunkiens? How do you spell the word for those spinning sharp metal stars? I think maybe shuriken.

They showed a jumping attack launching multiple shuriken in the announcement trailer (looked like 3 or 4 vs. 8 from the Genesis games). Seems like most gameplay is cqb with handheld weapons though.

Really excited for this one. It’s a shame that a physical copy will be more difficult to obtain than it should in North America. 3 is still probably my favorite out of the 2D Shinobis. The ability to run and expanded melee options greatly improved the flow of the game over Revenge. This also reminds me that I need to finish play throughs of Vengeful Guardian Moonrider and Ganryu 2.

Shinobi III was a pretty good 3D game as well, if you count the 3DS port

A bit OT but M2 really did some magic with their 3DS ports. "Super Scaler" arcade games like Space Harrier and Outrun were obvious picks, but the way they expanded the view of Genesis and SMS games was really impressive. Too bad eyestrain was a problem (for me) until the New Nintendo 3DS with the eye tracking, huge improvement in eye comfort.

There was an amazing blog about those m2 ports that I think has since been taken offline. I’ll see if I can find the links I had sometime today.

My rank of Shinobi games

Shinobi Shadow Dancer Genesis
Revenge of Shinobi Genesis
Shinobi III Genesis
Shinobi Arcade
Shinobi Shadow Dancer Arcade
Shinobi Sega Master System
Alex Kidd Shinobi Sega Master System

Shinobi 4 Art of Vengeance - pending August 29 2025

I'm surprised there weren't more games in the popular series. Sega took forever to reboot their franchises, too over-consumed with Sonic games for decades.

Can't believe I found them and that they're still active. Well worth a read.

Well there was a 2D Shinobi on Saturn, it was decent but people didn't seem to like the graphics style (similar look to the original Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter: The Movie). Also, the live-action cinematics in between levels were b-movie gold

Shinobi and Nightshade/Kunoichi for PS2 might be the only 3D entries, they were really challenging and could use a port with some control updates. After that, a generic GBA game or two killed off the series for years.

Haha, yes. I loved those ports. While were talking about 3D Shinobi, its a shame that we havent seen modern follow-ups to the PS2 games. Hotsuma and Hibana are lost to time Im afraid.

A 3DS Shinobi III must have been very cool to see in stereo 3D. I should've bought the 3DS as a big 3D fan.
