If A24 can't give I Saw the TV Glow a 4K despite a 4K master existing, I doubt they'll give Ne Zha 2 a 3D Blu either.

It does require some level of understanding of the "Investiture of the Gods" to recognise the characters but most of them are pretty self-explanatory I thought through the way they interacted. What I saw was more was foreigners not getting the more Chinese concepts of the story where rebelliousness was tolerated if you've got strong filial piety (pretty much sums up Nezha) or the Chinese expectations that certain characters are devious and scheming, or the rebellion against Heaven's so called plans.

Overall Lightchaser films are more introspective (such as the White Snake Trilogy, Yang Jian or Jiang Ziya). For people who prefer live action Wuershan has directed 2 parts of the "Creation of the Gods/Fengshen Trilogy" which follows the storyline but glosses over some of the backstory in favour of getting into the main story so Nezha and Erlang Shen/Yang Jian simply show up to assist Jiang Ziya without much introduction. However, the characters are very well known in China to the point they really don't require much introduction.

Tickets are now on sale for the US reissue, there's a bunch of 3D IMAX showings (at least in my area)

I am surprised to see a 3D showtime at my Cinemark theaters for Ne Zha 2 3D. I wonder how the 3D is in this one. The animation and design looks interesting and colorful.

A24 said they wanted to expand their range of film releases and this would qualify as part of their new plan, being animated CGI in 3D.

For limited release 3D movies only getting 3D for a short time in 3D theaters, I guess it's a start and better than nothing at all for 3D. Eventually it could resurface in the future for a 3D home format.

Slow Friday here at work so decided to watch this Nah Jah (Ne Zha), 100% depth in this they pushed too far in so nothing ever gets past the frame. There's a lot of action tho, kinda reminded me a little of the Avatar anime, fans will definitely like this. I just don't think it will be a hit here in the US mostly due to it's length IMO 2hrs 2 min is too long for this kind of movies. Btw the entire bonus scene sequence from when the music clip kicks in is not in 3D.

It isn't an anime. Drawing style mimics the anime style but it is a western cartoon.

How was the layering of different objects, characters from each other? Good separation or more shallow?

I wonder if it's natively rendered 3D from within the 3D software program or converted more likely these days to save money not having to render the film out twice, once for each camera eye.

Looks like this was a bad move for A24 - the dubbed version is bombing in theatres!

Be sure to hurry if you want to catch the 3D presentation at the cinema!

I want to see the non-dubbed version in 3D (missed it when it originally released). Thought about catching this even though it is dubbed, but I'm mostly seeing 2D screenings and most are at non-ideal times for my schedule. Got to see 7 other 3D movies in theaters this summer at least... but yea this will be out of theaters very quickly if it is making like $300 per screen.

I'm not as technical doing reviews like most here. My gripe is with movies like this with constant battles and stuff blowing up and getting tossed at the screen they should've pushed the 3D more with pop outs (don't need to be in your face pop outs but at least poke outside the screen (like in Deadpool & Wolverine's open credit scene), i did not agree with their artistic decision for a more conservative and depth perception only. I'm gonna use an example there are ashes on screen that could easily float outside the screen, also tentacles and weapons could come closer instead it stays in within a distance in depth perception.

To me it is just like image 3, if it was more of image 1 it would've been fine.

Films with too many image 1 shots end up looking like 2D if they don't throw in some of image 2 and image 3 as well.

On the plus side I am a bit less sad now that this will never come out on 3D Blu-ray.

From memory it was not bad (I saw it in 3D in the original Mandarin release in February), but it's mostly depth based with no real popouts that I could tell; a few areas could have benefited from 3D but didn't appear to take advantage of it. Other people commented in this thread as well from the original release so worth reading as well.

Definitely a colourful presentation and a lot of effort put into rendering some of the final sequences (where armies face off) so it's worth watching I think. I'd recommend watching "Ne Zha" if you haven't already to get a feel for how it is since it's targeted for people under the age of 20 (in general) as Ne Zha as a character can get pretty obnoxious unless you understand what the filmmakers are trying to portray.

Saw this today. The 3D is really good, excellent high medium depth throughout. Though like others have mentioned there are zero pop-outs that could have easily been achieved, but the 3D still does its job at elevating the cinematic experience with really good depth & separation.

This movie is awesome. I’ve never seen the first, but I was never confused once the entire time. The story is so layered, where different events have certain consequences that unfold in a really interesting way where you’re always on your toes regarding where the story will go next. The action is insane! Huge set pieces and amazing fight choreography! This is like if you mixed Kung Fu Panda with DragonBall Z.

I wonder if Turbine could potentially license Ne Zha 1, 2, and even Jiang Ziya (made by the same studio) for a 3D Blu-ray release.

Yes that's what I thought at the time but it has been a while since I saw in the cinemas; debating if I should watch it again in English with 3D given we get so few releases (a bit sad "The Bad Guys 2" doesn't appear to screen in 3D locally).

It's good you're able to follow the story as that was a criticism of both movies to a degree but to be honest people can struggle with the differences in how the Chinese write stories vs USA stories.

I would be preordering without a doubt, Jiang Ziya was my preferred film out of the 3 for the more adult storytelling and themes. I do note Chengdu Coco Cartoon includes homages to other animated films (Jiang Ziya = Berserk, Ne Zha 2 = Evangelion) which is always good to see (there's probably others but these were the most obvious).

The poster always puts me off this movie and I wasn't in the slightest bit interested. But I've just seen the trailer and it looks fun, similar to the Monkey King and "To the West" movies. I've been watching Chinese movies for years so story style is not an issue. It doesn't look like any 3D showings are near me. But Jaws is coming back for one day this week.

The recommendation is definitely to see Part 1 which sets the tone, I'd say Part 2 is more expansive in story scope and has some more fun sequences to balance out the darker sequences that are covered. There's a lot of similarities character wise between Ne Zha and Sun Wukong, the story is tailored more to modern families overall I think due to the parent/child interactions that is probably indicative of how things are in China now.

Thanks.

I didn't get a good amount of time to see this in theaters in 3D considering the length of the film, and as expected, that time slot in 3D only lasted the one weekend range.

-----------------------
A24 with their hopes of expanding their line up of films, took a chance releasing this one in theaters but it's good they tried. Reminds me of when NWave was finally able to get Wild Life Robinson Crusoe 3D into 3D theaters that one and only time in the US. I saw it in 3D that weekend but it tanked in theaters and NWave's 3D films have not returned since to any of my theaters unfortunately. Strong 3D in that one, but was made for toddlers.
