Don't count on USPS to know what "printed material" applies to. They can't can't even consistently follow their own rules when it comes to media mail. I once shipped a hardcover novel with media mail and it was flagged as "ineligible" resulting in postage due for delivery.

I used to order a lot of graphic novels and one of the shops I frequented would include a note in the box with every order shipped media mail for the would-be postal inspector listing the qualifications for media since their packages were getting falsely flagged by USPS as ineligible.

I recall someone in another subforum telling a story about shipping a Blu-ray media mail at the post office and the clerk asking what they were sending. When they said (and I'm paraphrasing here) "Blu-rays" the clerk said "that's not covered" so they said "they're DVDs" and the clerk was suddenly OK with it.

I don't count on USPS to know where the next town over is.

But the items are shipped under various required classification codes (I know, I've had to fill this out myself), so presumably whether something is or isn't subject to tariff would be based on that code, and not the whims of your local USPS worker.

So... another item that won't fit on the shelf.

Nice to see it has an English dub, though. Interesting also to see that AllTheAnime.com directs US customers to Shout Factory (where it's $94.99 shipped). I ended up ordering it from CR, though since (with the ultimate fan discount), it's currently $80.74 (shipped).

CBP is in control of collecting tariffs. USPS doesn't touch the package until it clears customs. As others have said, the code determines the tariff category. What will those categories be? Who the hell knows...

Not really interested in CyberPunk: Edgerunners, but I definitely want to get the Irregular at Magic High School Season 3 and Blue Exorcist: Beyond the Snow Saga, and they're both about that same price as Edgerunners. Ugh.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners - November 20
Deluxe Edition (Anime Planet exclusive)
Limited Edition Steelbook

No pictures yet. Discs are shared with the UK and French release. I'm hoping that Plaion didn't mess up the audio like they did with The Colors Within German, Italian, UK release.

I will find out soon enough if they'll try to apply tariffs even on stuff they shouldn't. For the past 11 years I've been ordering magazines from Amazon Japan on a monthly basis, and they use DHL Express, so a private carrier. If I have to pay tariffs on those when they should be exempt, I'll find out very soon when I make my next order. I used to regularly import Dengeki Moeoh, Megami Magazine and a few other magazines (some now discontinued, main one being NyanType), but these days it's only Dengeki Moeoh, Etsu Frontier, Megami Magazine, and whatever magazines cosplayer and gravure idol Enako ends up on the cover for, which is a lot (she just had her yearly Summer Jacket campaign).

On anime figure collecting, it's painful, and there's now a 3rd thread on MFC dedicated to the tariffs. The 3 shops I primarily use, AmiAmi, Good Smile Global, and Hobby Search have all suspended US shipments entirely following Japan Post suspending shipments to the US.
CDJapan had a note in their US shipping policy update regarding about that.

Although U.S. customs regulations suggest that certain items—such as CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays, and books (informational materials)—may be exempt from the 15% import duty, it remains unclear whether carriers are currently processing these shipments accordingly.

Therefore, please choose between FedEx Priority, Priority (Pak), or FICP based on the contents of your order.

Well that would be cool, wish we could get some clarity on that.

Because I also saw this in a Reddit forum

Jesse from Diabolik here. Yes this is true. But also up to the whim of whoever is processing your import. I have literally 10k worth of customs duties I have been fighting with ups and FedEx about. The packages were tagged correctly and then the carrier change it to an hs code that is taxable. Also I pay a minimum of $50 in fees to import a box. They have come up with all kinds of new fees to charge importers to make up for the time it costs to process shipments. As a country we process 4 million packages a day from other countries. With the end of the de minimus most of these packages are now going to be scrutinized but there aren’t enough people that know what they are doing to make this happen correctly. This is all a potential nightmare of bullshit. Also I want to reiterate that tariffs are a tax on the American people not any other country.

Isn't Amazon Japan - unlike most other Japanese stores - handling any taxes & duties on their own? Or does this not apply to US customers?

At least for EU customers Amazon JPN added a pre-calculated fee during checkout for taxes, duties & such and if the actual fees was higher, Amazon JPN paid the difference - and if the actual fees were lower, Amazon JPN refunded the difference to the customer. During a change some years ago on how things got processed, some customers even received full refund on taxes & duties for older pre-orders.

In spite of what Jesse says, tariffs are not a "tax on the American people." They're a tax on importers who may or may not pass the costs on to their consumers. And, as he admits, these charges DON'T APPLY to blu-rays. The fact that he's pissed off because he's fighting with a "carrier" who wrongfully changed a code to make his items taxable is a matter of misbehavior from the carrier, not some fault of the tariff system.

I don't like what I'm seeing from certain companies, either, that look like they're using people's confusion about all of this as an excuse to charge us more, even though it's not justified. "But we don't know if they're going to process them as tariff-free" doesn't seem like much of an excuse for extra charges.

Just checked Amazon Jp added import charges to the checkout. So looks like they are doing the same as they do for the EU.
I’m curious if they will cover it for existing pre-orders though.
