Wouldn't the cost to train and send Cruise to the ISS would be higher than any movie budget could afford? Let alone the cost of training and sending additional cast and crew, plus transporting the necessary film equipment? I guess NASA will subsidize a good portion of this, in the spirit of using the movie as recruitment (their tweet basically says as much). I imagine a very small portion of the finished film will actually feature the "shot in space" material, but it'll be hyped up to market the movie.

There was always going to be that first film filmed in orbit. There was always going to be a 96% chance Cruise would be involved. The guy is incredibly dedicated to bring audiences the best experience.

However I am finding it hard to see what filming in actual space would bring to the table. The complications involved means you cant film elaborate action scenes and would it really be any more realistic than what we have in modern sci fi now? I could wholly believe Sandra Bullock was floating around inside a real space station.

Aside from the novelty factor of this I cant really see a need, But I am willing to find out.

I think that filming in space will do a lot. But not for the audience in the first place. The most important thing that they can get from this is an even greater popularization of the space theme in society. Filming of this kind can become the very lever for a new explosive impetus to the growth of the entire space industry. It can also lead to the growth of not only the companies involved but also the growth of a large number of small companies of followers.
P.S. I would also be very interested to see what comes of it.

Liman offered a non-update at the Venice Film Festival:

Pressed on the outer space project with Cruise, first revealed by Deadline in 2020, Liman said it remained on the cards, but there were no updates.

“I’ve just finished this [Asteroid] so I’m now processing what next and what I learned, part of it will be how the audience reacts to it. You’d rather I give you more concrete answers but you’re getting me totally raw… I don’t know where it leaves me. I know I want to do more in space… I am more excited about this idea of characters who have no business of going into space after making this.
