It's much rarer to see massive box sets, I'm getting fatigued by those small size sets, especially when we pay alot for them.

Imprint has released what 425 editions and they are all regular sized, only 4 of them are big box sets, The Neverending Story, Dune Sandbox, The Keep, and Lifeforce
This is a new one. I've seen people b**ch about everything under the sun but never seen anyone complain because the box sets are "too small" LMAO. Are you for real or just being sarcastic? The market for these massive sets is very small. They're very expensive and awkward to display, not to mention a challenge to ship. I like them but still think they're 100% overkill. Umbrella's box sets are perfect IMO. Some are actually very big spacehoggers but still within displayable parameters.

Umbrella always has simple slipcover and Amaray editions, which is what I mostly get and did this month (Dust Devil, Angel’s Egg, Lake Mungo). They get much needed revenue from the swag editions, but they’re not your only option.

This is my first and (probably) only Umbrella box I’ll ever get. I just don’t care at all for big box tat editions very much (pricy/on a budget, no shelf space/no mansion, mid/meh movies) unless the movie is something worthy or special to go that extra mile.

Very nice. I've had this one on my mental watch list for many years but never got around to it.
Fingers crossed it won't be DNR'd to shit like so much anime on UHD is.
Or even worse, an old master with a bunch of AI garbage pretending to be a "new restoration".
I'll be positive for a change and say that this one will probably turn out good. Don't know why but just have a good feeling about it.

Dissapointing really, such a tiny set like all of Umbrella's sets.
When I buy a collector's edition I expect a big box set, I want my pennies worth!

They're also (mostly) ridiculously overpriced. You enjoy them, I'm very happy for you

Isn't it nice that we can all have nice things?

There is nothing to worry about. Here's the new 4K restoration, uploaded to YouTube in 4K. See for yourself. It was also supervised by Mamoru Oshii.

Umbrella always have a regular edition available on release date which is just the discs and case with slipcover. At least they give you the choice and you don’t have to wait for the box to sell out.

Yeah, that looks somewhat more "digital" than expected. It could be the YouTube compression, but usually 4K uploads can retain some of the grain, so...

That isn't Youtube compression, it looks totally scrubbed. It seems my optimism from a few posts above was misguided.

Exactly. Also, "It was also supervised by Mamoru Oshii." is not inspiring confidence considering Oshii loved the heavily DNR'd GitS2 remaster calling it "elegant" and most detailed than ever before... lol. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...&postcount=453

Phew, looks like it has been scrubbed with chlorine and wax polished.
Might get it just for the clarity and keep the old JP Blu for authenticity.

The regular 2 disc version is listed twice for some reason. No prices.

Yeah for whatever reason the trailers are horribly compressed and also scrubbed. Caps of what's on the disc don't look like that at all. Very odd this one is!

I was hoping to prove there wasn't AI in it, so I forgot to check out for old-fashioned DNR. I wanted to ease your worries regarding AI, since you explicitly mentioned it.

Random question: what do you think of the Princess Mononoke 4K trailer?

Screenshots comparing the 4K trailer with the BD:

https://slow.pics/c/pMfval6z?image-fit=canvas

One more thing: when it comes to animation, animators have historically despised grain and wanted to minimize it as much as possible. Personally, if cel animation gets some level of DNR, I hope it's at least restrained and careful enough to not impact the art, like the Future Boy Conan and Nadia 4K remasters or The Little Mermaid UHD, and unlike the horrendous old BDs of Cinderella, The Sword In The Stone...

It helps that animation can get away with more DNR than live-action textures.
