After that, 1 hour to transfer the games to it was more understandable as it was many GBs of games.

The HDD is really fast copying games to my PS5. A few minutes for large games 50+ GB.

If you have an ultra fast HDD, that's cool. I'm interested to hear how long it takes PS5 (original launch version) to load up anything after pressing "Select games to copy to HDD" from the PS5's internal storage SSD.

Yeah, no i completely agree that for some reason just having the PS5 read which games are on it and the size of them does have a delay that's annoying and obviously the time it takes sucks. I usually would say to "chunk it" and essentially throw a few on at a time and then go play and when you are going to go do something else, do the same.

I wonder if maybe telling a console to go to rest after a certain time of inactivity could be used where it turns off after transferring all the games.

That delay just to display the contents happens even if you're moving between internal solid state drives. So I think it's fair to blame the PS5.

Good point that it's best to transfer several from PS5 to the HDD at a time to probably save time. I work on other things while it's loading the games I want to transfer, and then finally when it loads, then I select the ones to move to the PS5. I was surprised mostly, that Sony hasn't fine tuned this portion of the PS5. The SSD able to load entire maps in a few seconds after being installed while playing.

Thanks. Good to know it's not just my original PS5 that is slow for selecting games to transfer to the HDD.

Overall, I think PS5 has been great, but there is still room for improvement.

One thing I will remember is out of the box for the launch 2020 version, there was literally zero way to play a single game without updating the console via internet of many GBs. Those without high speed internet were out of luck as PS5 said in order to play, the console must be updated first. I used to be in that situation years ago, but thankfully my area got faster internet options.

Will the PS6 come default with a disc drive?

Let’s say Sony does away with physical games, and the PS6 and PS7 are digital only. Then let’s say I wanna play Ghost of Tsushima or The Last of Us Part I on my PS6, but I only have the old physical discs; That means I would all have to re-buy the digital versions of those games!

So doesn’t that mean buying digital games TODAY is future-proofing my games so I can enjoy them in the next generation?

With the T&Cs they have these days. You don't "own" anything really when you purchase digitally and physical game discs sometimes don't even have the full game on the disc, sometime require an "authentication" check or further download of data to play and sometimes require an always online connection.

PS6 will probably be one of the last consoles with a disc drive for BC with PS5 but sold separately just like the PS5 Pro model.

I don't really need to elaborate much but people pretty much already know my views on the digital vs disc side of things.

I’m willing to bet it will be a DIFFERENT disc drive for PS6, so no carrying forward the one you have for PS5/Pro. Maybe they’ll make a USB-C drive of some sort that can be used for legacy games which would let you carry it forward as long as the drive itself lasts.

So half my library is physical, the other half is digital.

I guess I would have to sell my physical games (The Last of Us Part II, SpiderMan 2) and hope people buy them in the future, and then re-purchase them again in their digital version.

Because the games that I bought digitally (Forza Horizon 5, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and Death Stranding 2) will be ready and available in my library as soon as I get a PS6 without a disc drive.

It’s an odd feeling

As soon as the whispers came out about an optional drive the consumer in me was hoping it was just a bog standard slab external drive that you could then use moving forward. The realist knew they'd make it fit inside and charge you for a new one every system.

I think for aesthetic purposes they will make it like the current version attaches for PS5 Digital models but 100% not have it be BC despite technically there being no issues so they deliberately can sell it to you for a higher price at launch. Corporations gonna corporation i guess.

Funnily enough, i would keep the disc versions just for the preservation of things. Eventually at some point just before production ceases you can probably buy a PS5 or PS5 Pro cheap to keep a hold of all your physical games for years and break it out as a retro console lol.

Digital Games you can build up on sale if you really want to and most titles from last gen eventually although not very quickly get reduced down. The Arkham Asylum Batman games for example were like £5 for 3 of them with all DLCs on sale.

To me they’re telling us they’re done with physical.

Imagine going to Best Buy to buy a Bluray player, but the machine only comes with the PLAY, REWIND, FAST FWD, PAUSE, and STOP button. It streams movies, but you have to buy a separate disc drive if you wanna play discs.

They're sending a message, and we’re burying our heads in the sand

Or maybe it’s like that guy who can’t see that the girl he’s with is just no longer into him, so he’s forcing it. He’s all suspicious and putting on a happy face, but she’s one foot out the door

Lmao, PLEASE don't bring relationships into this example or we'll be here all eternity lol.

Yeah, unfortunately the writing is on the wall and has been for a while now due to changes in consumer habits of using streaming services for music and then movies whilst not caring about sub par audio and video quality. Gaming is heading the same direction with digital games first and more streaming stuff down the line which we kind of already have via PS+ Premium etc.

To me, i am more concerned with Digital even in download form because of the fact there's no way to preserve things. GTA games for example as recent as GTA V when it launched on PS3 had specific songs, but over time they got patched out. The only way to play that version is with the original disc but when that's no longer an option, you get what you get from the publishers.

The other concerns their ability to "yank" your access almost at anytime they want and you having no recourse really due to T&Cs as well as forced online only that even when playing single player "offline" content only, your games useless and Gran Turismo 7 is the easiest example to show that imo.

I'm a disc drive and physical media dinosaur but i'll happily go extinct with that preference of available media. My only wish is that maybe another physical media format can come along to take us back to the days of just inserting the game and away you go to play. No Internet needed BS for anything.

For big GB games, I actually prefer the speed of a disc transferring the files, and having the full game on the disc (for storage reasons mostly since the game is physically intact on the disc, hopefully in a complete-able version). I won't buy a disc version that doesn't have a full game on it and requires downloading. I rather just have the digital version then since it's really just a digital game, the disc being a key to play it.

It's at least good to see there are still discs being supported by a number of labels/manufacturers, and they all haven't abandoned its value to many disc fans.

My interest in PS6 is probably 10% at this point. Very little interest as PS5 is nice, but I'm noticing even when playing new types of games, there are only so many ways a developer can create a game.

Remember when Driver 2 was released on PS1? Then GTAIII on PS2? Many GTA fans were saying the Driv3r game was a clone of GTAIII, but Driver 2 already established getting out of your car to walk around. But the real point is, it's just a game mechanic, like walking, running or jumping in any game. It's the combination of gameplay features/mechanics that make a game hopefully more unique/valuable to play.

I genuinely wish we had gotten a proper evolution for physical media to allow us to play things completely off the disc as we could up to about the PS3 gen when partial installs became a thing for some titles and mainstream pretty much for PS4 onwards.

Maybe eventually NVMe tech will be cheap enough where we can have it all on there to play from.

So I finally got a PlayStation 5, the slim edition.

However, Ghost of Tsushima keeps crashing over and over again. I'm playing on Kurosawa Mode. I have looked at the back of the disc and I do not see any scratches or dirt or any other abnormalities.

I reset the console and this time I signed into my PSN account. So far, the crashes have lessened, but they're still happening. Very frustrating.

Where are these PS5 discs pressed? Has Tsushima given anyone else technical troubles?

Thank you!

There's a possibility and I have had this happen that it's your own console. On PS4 I had to do the most ridiculous BS of deleting a cloud save after backing it up locally and then reuploading it. Rebuilding the database etc. and it then finally helped fix the issue to a spot where I could even launch and play the game.

If you have a friend, borrow their disc and check or if possible see if exchanging the disc is even the cause. Usually Reddit has a LOT of people who run into these obscure BS issues and help people.

Did you try uninstalling and reinstalling the game? There could have been an issue during install that could be fixed by this.
