Default PS3 Slim Do i need a receiver w/ TrueHD & DTSHD?

Hey guys, i'm about to buy a ps3 slim. I heard something about TRUEHD & DTS HD on the PS3 slim. So that means i dont have to buy an expensive Audio receiver that supports TRUEHD & DTS HD in order to experience it? Thank guys

As long as you have a receiver that can play audio via HDMI, you can get lossless audio with the PS3. Otherwise if it only accepts optical/etc, you can only get lossy DD and DTS.

The slim PS3 supports bitstreaming of TrueHD and DTS-HD Ma over HDMI to your receiver. It will also decode those formats internally and transmit them over HDMI to your receiver. Either way, you will need a receiver that can take the signal over HDMI. If you hook up the PS3 via optical to your receiver the best you can get is lossy Dolby Digital, lossy DTS, and PCM 2.0.

It looks like the first one (model VSX-519V-K) does not decode TrueHD and DTS-HD MA based on the specs, but I'm not real familiar with the model and someone can please correct me. It looks like it only has HDMI passthrough.

The second one (model VSX-819H-K) does decode TrueHD and DTS-HD MA based on the specs. Of the two you would want to go with this one.

Is a 7.1 system out of the question for you? Just a suggestion, but you might consider going that route now (to at least give yourself the opportunity to grow into rather than wishing later you had it available).

I may get myself flamed here...

I recently got a Sony 7.1 (STR DH800) system on sale at Best Buy for under $400 and I've been happy with it. When I bought it I had no immediate plans for adding 2 more speakers for the 7.1 setup, but I didn't want to shortchange myself (less than a month later I did end up buying the extra 2 speakers for the rears).

If you wanted to go the 7.1 route I can recommend the Sony, but a lot of people do prefer Pioneer.

I'm sure others will have various suggestions that may be better / cheaper, but I'm just giving my opinion from my own experience.

Under technical specs it does list TrueHD, but not DTS-HD MA. I would say it does decode both, but need to look into it a little further.

Edit: According to Pioneer's website, model Pioneer VSX-919AH-K does decode TrueHD and DTS-HD MA. It is also 7.1. If you can shell out the extra $100 for this one instead of model VSX-819H-K, I think you would be glad you did.

Your first link does say it has
Quote:
SA-CD and multichannel analog (PCM) audio playback support via HDMI
For enjoying your favorite music and movie soundtracks via your home theater system.
Since it can do multichannel analog, it WOULD be able to play back lossless audio. The PS3 would decode the audio, send it to the receiver via LPCM over HDMI and send it to the speakers. While I would look at one that does do the decoding internally, this could be a cheap way to get into lossless audio.

DTS and DTS-HD Master Audio are two different things. But the VSX-919AH-K supports DTS HD MA.

Pioneer is an excellent brand. I used to have an Elite (without HDMI) years ago, but upgraded to an affordable Denon with HDMI and Dolby True HD/DTS HD..

I'm aware of that. In my effort to try to provide the OP with an answer to his question, I typed DTS instead of DTS-HD MA. My bad. Point is, as you so aptly stated, the VSX-919AH-K supports DTS-HD MA.

You might need to rethink the 1019, I am not sure how you will connect your latest amp purchase.
