English DTS-HD MA 5.1

I plan on watching this this weekend, but my initial impression is wow. This blows the DVD out of the water. Great colors, nice detail, fine layer of grain and the soundtrack was very nice. Will post further impressions after I am able to view. If Buena Vista manages to make their release look better, then you are in for a real treat.

Both can be found at either of these places in that link.

Both are around 13.99-15.99 Euros before shipping. Shipping varies.

AnimeOnBlu, if I may give you a hint on what to ignore regarding Dutch Blu-ray's: all Dutch FilmWorks and A-Film releases. They really suck regarding video quality. There is a Dutch review website (DVD.nl) that keeps saying this over and over again with each new review of a DFW or A-Film Blu-ray.

I personally got Michael Clayton, 1408 and The Mist as DFW release, but that's only because I was able to buy them combined for around 20 Euros.

The DFW movies are easy to spot, just look at the bottom of the front:
http://www.mediadis.com/pictures/big/177074.jpg
The bar that says "1080P - High Definition" in any color means you deal with a DFW release.

So I don't know how much you import from The Netherlands, but I would be careful if I were you. ;-)

What are you talking about? That is not said at all. However you have to be careful with independent distributors! I agree.

DFW is unreliable in terms of quality. Especially in the beginning with wrong aspect ratio's, 1080i/p / 50. In later batches they showed they listened to the consumer with only 1080p/24. And they did distribute some very nice editions. Did you forget Aviator? Only version until then with DTS HD MA? Technically there is nothing wrong with 1408 or The Mist. Michael Clayton is said to be good, not great (DVD.nl review). Be carefull, but they have some very nice editions. Faulty editions are for example The Grudge, Shawshank Redemption.

A-film is doing just fine. No extra features on back catalog titles, but technically they gave us some very nice editions. DVD.nl said it also in its reviews. As well as DVD-home.nl. All titles thus far have 1080p/24 and DTS HD MA. Well if you want the extra features, you will have a problem. But the price in comparison with the quality of the discs is very good.

RCV seems the most unreliable factor at this time with various great, but also various suboptimal releases (1080i/50). As well as Paradiso with the original track in Dolby Digital 5.1 and the French dub in True HD on their newest release.

So stating avoid all, is just ridiculous. You mix your opinion with not existing facts (DVD.nl statement).

I agree with you that literally speaking, not all DFW releases are that bad, but... what I wanted to point out is that most of them are far below the US and/or UK releases of the same movie.

For instance, Michael Clayton has been reviewed at DVD.nl getting 3.5 stars out of 5. Quite reasonable if you just look at the rating, but less impressive when you read the accompanying text. Let me point out some excerpts:
- "The sharpness is good, detail is sufficient but varies too much."
- "The image often shows some depth, but the darkness of the movie causes small details in the background to dissapear at times."
- "Filmgrain is constantly present, but does not distract and edge enhancement occiasionally occurs."
- "Furthermore some light aliasing is occasionally visible."

Not something that deserves 3.5 out of 5 stars, if you ask me.

Look, we can discuss this into infinity and I might have been too harsh, it's just that I wanted to point out that you have to be very careful. This example points out one of the worst Blu-ray experiences I have ever had. It is just not what you expect from Blu-ray. You buy Blu-ray for the fine details in the image, the clear sharpness, the vivid colors and the overwhelming audio, not to see a lot of filmgrain and regular image faults during the movie.

To be honest, overall the image is better than the DVD, but expecting a HD experience I just kept irritating myself throughout the movie. The DVD is not flawless and overall has a softer iimage, but it does not have issues that enormous, which makes for an easier and better experience in my humble opinion.

I'm a little surprised that the quality is that good, considering they've squeezed a film of about 150 minutes onto a BD25. I assume there are no extras or commentaries, otherwise a single layer would be really pushing it.

I would expect the US release (whenever it appears) to be on a BD50, probably with some extras.

There is nothing on the disc other than a few PAL trailers before the film. It looks nice, but could end up being a similar story to the DK Pulp Fiction vs the French Pulp Fiction. In the end, if you want what will probably be the best JB, wait for the Buena Vista. I just could not wait since BV has not re-announced a date and I really wanted to see this again in HD.

These are actually my 2 and 3 NL imports. I am well aware of the unfortunately poor releases by native studios. Which is why I was pleasantly surprised by these 2 releases. While it is possible that the domestic US releases will be better, I am not in the least bit disappointed to have purchased these.

BTW- There are PAL trailers before the release. This might upset some players but I was able to skip through them on my Panny BD30.

Well, I just watched my copy. In one word: wow.

PQ: 4.0-4.5/5
Very strong. Some scenes really popped. Colors were extremely strong. Skin tones dead on. Plenty of facial detail. No EE and I did not notice any DNR. There was a light layer of film grain. No banding that I saw. There were some scenes that were a bit hazy so detail was reduced (specifically in scenes where a red light was used). There was also print damage at various points (this is the reason that some might drop the score to a 4.0. I think it added to the experience but some might be distracted by it. Depending on where you fall in the spectrum, the picture is either a 4.0 or a 4.5).
AQ: 4/5
Movie was dialogue heavy. Not a dynamic movie. Dialogue was clear, only times it wasn't clear was when someone mumbled, which in that case, was hard to understand. Music was strong and clear. No sync-issues of any kind. Very front heavy movie.

I was not disappointed. For a 150 min movie on a BD25, I was absolutely impressed. This release I would venture to say is the best of the two currently available (Polish version vs. Netherlands Version). Highly recommended.

It makes perfect sense. In The Netherlands there are quite a lot of independent movie studios, like Dutch FilmWorks, A-Film and RCV. They buy the rights to dsitribute that movie in The Netherlands, regardless what format (DVD, Blu-ray, digital). These studios will never ever have any blockbuster Hollywood movies like, let's say Transformers, Iron Man, Harry Potter and such. However, cult classics, arthouse and other somewhat underrated movies do get in the hands of these independent movie studios. And although their quality isn't always top notch, they do know what [movies] we as movie fans want.

In other words: these movies are probably in the hands of Lionsgate, Paramount or some other slow releasing company in the US.

It's foreign.

And they're not foreign countries either. Films have no borders (except locked regions) and if people weren't so damn ignorant or lazy they'd get off their arse and import.

Small world, so live with it and wait. Or import.

Since nobody replied to this I might as well chime in; the release is region-free and plays on a U.S PS3. Agree with the others that it is a good-looking Blu-Ray (for a BD25, that is). Obviously it could be improved on, and it is not as clean-looking as the Hong Kong release of Pulp Fiction, but it'll work well until there's a better release available.

Just some Dutch shops with their prices:
Bol.com € 11,99 + 17,35 shipping to US
FreeRecordShop.nl € 17,88 + 8,49 shipping to US

These are the two cheapest options from shops that ship directly to the US. There might be cheaper ones out there, but I think that the 8,49 shipping costs are as low as you'll find. So I would never buy on eBay if it is more expensive than buying directly from the ones mentioned above.

The only cheaper shipping option I can think of would be someone ordering this for you and shipping it via the normal post office.

Btw... If you need help getting through the ordering part of the website you can try Google translate or you can ask me if you want. ;-)
