Warner Bros. has the largest studio catalog of any existing major, bar none. It stands to reason that they want to firmly establish the financial success of their big-ticket catalog titles, especially their period content from the 30's and 40's. I don't think they moved the LOTR theatrical release to keep it from being cannibalized by Wizard of Oz, Casablanca normal-size edition, and Gone With the Wind...I think they moved it to protect the sales of Oz, Casablanca, and Gone With the Wind.

Seriously. WB released, what, 11 titles on Blu this week? It's not so hard to believe that they want to give LotR a more exclusive release and ensure financial success for their other catalog releases.

Good point and that is crazy as well......this would be the biggest BR seller this holiday season no doubt about it. I dont buy the "too many big name titles coming out at once so LOTR needs to be delayed" BS they are giving us.......IF that is true, LOTR should be the last title they delay out of the "big name" titles. I wonder what the real reason is for the delay......


I would be surprised if they dont release the EEs in Nov/Dec though (and I am betting they will still hit 2010).

I think this will hurt sales if anything not improve them.......LOTR would sell BR players and we are talking about holiday shopping as well......releasing them in March will not generate as many sales IMHO as releasing during the "shopping" season when people are spending money like crazy.

It had one ending, it simply had multiple story threads to wrap up. It took Tolkien three chapters to wrap up his novel -- slow mo pillow fight aside, Jackson ended his film in relative short order.

There's no official date on Amazon... But if it's being delayed, you won't be getting it until its release. Pre-ordered or not.

So I can buy this classic set for $40 on day 1? Thanks for the heads-up. And now the serious answer, no. My guess is the reason for the delay is they're releasing both versions of all 3 movies on the same discs. Hopefully it won't impact the quality of the movie transfers.
