But don't you think some collectors are going to feel burned that will want the long cut that just maybe didn't know about the final cut? What about movies like 300 that were released how long ago and re-released in a deluxe edition so much later? I guess we are just going to disagree.

Being a collector implies they would double, triple or quadruple dip anyways so that is moot. You have more of a point about 300 but the difference with Watchmen is that both versions were announced at the same time so no one should feel 'burned' if they did their due diligence.

OK but you are still missing my point. I didn't know about the final cut. Excuse me for not knowing about it. My point is the studios do this ALL the time. Disney is already making plans to re-release Blu-rays of Pinocchio and Sleeping Beauty as part of their "Diamond" line. Come on! Where does it end? The studios have a long standing practice of releasing longer, director's cut, deluxe editions, etc. all the time. Usually it is a year or more down the line. And for collectors, many of them will re-buy them. If they would just end this practice and take their time putting the releases together maybe we wouldn't feel the need to rebuy.

Next year they will probably release an edition with all 3 versions seamlessly branched: theatrical, director's and extended. Plus Black Freighter stand alone, Under the Hood, and all the extras.

Remember, Warner's also released 10 diff versions of Lord of the Rings and are apparently gearing up to do so again on blu.

But once again your saying you don't double dip and the studios aren't forcing you to so why are you complaining? Also the collector's don't care how much a studio re-releases something they are still going to buy it. In my case I will wait for Paramount to get the rights to release it in a few months and then just buy it in my country instead of importing again.

The directors cut and the ultimate cut are two very different versions of the movie right?

I'm fairly certain it is just the same as The Director's Cut with Tales of the Black Freighter worked in, like the original graphic novel.

I don't know which version I want...the DC or Ultimate Cut. I bought the DC at BB on Sun. I have 30 days to decide. Ultimate cut comes out 30 days after I bought DC so I timed it ok. I will wait and see what deals will be had on Ultimate Cut and maybe the DC will be on sale cheaper in 30 days.

I have the DC and I keep telling myself I don't need the UC, but I am pretty sure I will buy it anyway. Sheesh. Not the first time or last time I will double dip. Sometimes, it is worth it in the end.

I've been holding out from buying any release of this film for this Ultimate Cut. A definite purchase for me.

Here's my $.02: If you know that studios have a history of re-re-releasing films than this whole thing with Watchmen shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone.

I adore the film so I will gladly hand over my $ for a double dip. I'll just trade in my motion comic BD beforehand. Still going to keep my DC of the film though, want to own both cuts.

Not to mention the fact they...you know.... told us that this was coming when the original release was announced.

Thumbs down Rip off!!!

Even Zack Synder has said that this is just a way for the studio to get more money. I will not buy it. I've heard, but I am not totally sure that this edition is not in fact the director's cut, but the theatrical version. And I don't like the pirate packaging. I already bought Tales of the Black Freighter for $5.00 at Target. Feel free to rip my head off like some of you feel the need to do to others.

I don't believe he ever said that. He knew all along that the Tales of the Black Freighter version of the film would be released separately and he intended on this. He even went on record saying the Director's Cut is the REAL cut of the movie, and called the longer cut with the animated woven in "fetishistic and kind of crazy".

what

Neither of those cuts are included. ONLY the Ultimate cut is. It is basically the full Director's Cut with a little additional live action material, and the added allegory of the animated pirate story.

I feel you there. Worst packaging they could have used in my opinion. I'll definitely be putting it all together in a custom case and adding my copy of the Director's Cut and standalone Tales of the Black Freighter as well.
