Dune (French Blu) is miles better than the HD-DVD.

Different releasing studio in France... I haven't checked yet but it's probably encoded differently.

The PQ on the HD-DVD is quite rough, the BD is much better, better colours.

I always thought the PQ on Dune for HD-DVD was fantastic (But I trust you that there's better out there).

I certainly wouldn't call it "rough". It looks pretty damned good on HD-DVD. The AQ is great, even though it's lossy though.

Wow, I can't believe there is someone else here that is collecting HD-DVD's in groves like I am right now. I'm buying three to four per week on average. Let's really talk people here. There are some titles that really haven't been mentioned yet. There is one title that truly comes to mind and there were actually only three steelbooks released on HD-DVD. One of those three is the amazing French version of Terminator 2. It is one of the best high definition movies I have ever heard in 7.1 dts hd and the picture quality is superb. I have also seen Transformers on the same 1080p superb Sony LCD recently at a friends house. The Transformers on Blu-ray was much more grainy versus it's HD-DVD counterpart. The only difference was a bit of the audio. Now, let's move on. There is another movie that was packaged much better and the picture quality and sound is superb. How about Crank on HD-DVD. Have you seen the packaging on that thing? The yellow disc is insane with the second disk saying f&(&($ck you imprinted on it. Now, the packaging is not what's important on Crank. It's the high definition transfer to HD-DVD that is superb. You also have Brotherhood of the Wolf that is great as far as sound and picture. Brotherhood is not even on blu-ray I thought. Correct me if I'm wrong. Bridge to Terabithia is wonderful as well. Man, you really don't want me to get started with this debate. What do you want to talk about Dolby Digital, DTS-HD, picture quality, 7.1 surround? There are a ton of titles and editions that will never get to blu-ray that were on HD-DVD in the same packaging and same casings. Oh, but notice how all of the above films I just named were from Germany or France? You bet you I said it. We haven't talked about probably the last HD-DVD film that will probably be ever released: Deadlands 2. Yes, it's coming and you need to google it and see what the director is packing on this awesome HD-DVD. You guys really don't want me to get started with a debate in here. Go ahead. Talk about me. I'll come right back with several hundred stunning sounding and picturesque beautifly seen HD-DVD's. I do realize that HD-DVD is gone and there are more movies on blu-ray versus HD-DVD. However, let me tell you people something. I like both formats. I just feel one is superior in capacity in my honest opinion. I stated in another forum that I have a friend that works for Warner Brothers and he stated he likes HD-DVD better than blu-ray. We all know(once again) that blu-ray is the exclusive high definition medium. I just wonder at times that I can get Justice League: The New Frontier on HD-DVD on Amazon for a puny $5.00 brand new versus the blu-ray version cheaper. I don't know guys. In addition, the Justice League on HD-DVD is dual sided versus it's blu-ray counterpart. Man, I could go on forever, but I will stop here. I know there will be somebody from the blu-ray fanbase that will probably bash me and and quote me. In fact, I predict one of you will. It's okay though. Like I said, I love both formats, but HD-DVD is my choice for certain titles when I can get them at the fraction of the cost. Oh, one last one people. Band of Brothers is said to look much better on HD-DVD versus blu-ray. It was released in Japan and hard to get right now. Let's go. Bring it on.

Thanks for the info BLKMAN. Oh yeah I love hddvd & bluray. I just finnished Grand Prix and I thought the PQ was awesome, maybe even better than the searchers. I REALLY want the Crank import bad.I am also going to pick up an XA 2 soon. Is that Deadlands movie for real? I was afraid it was a scam.
I also want the Dtheater tape of Alien but for $100+ I would have to be nuts.
Seriously though my intention is not to rekindle a format debate but just get info.I plan on getting many more movies for both and at least 10 for my Dtheater.

I might have to check that out. I thought the hddvd looked mostly great and certainly better than I saw at the theater as a kid. It was however a little inconsistent .

Probably anything that was re-released on a 50gb disc. Namely King Kong and Batman Begins. They're VC-1, but they measure at a pretty high bitrate, and the PQ on Kong is just beyond anything that HDDVD could have ever produced.

Ive owned both formats. I was impressed when I watched my first HD DVD(King Kong) but I was blown away when I watched my first Blu Ray.(The Dark Knight). The films Ive owned on both formats are Transformers, The Departed, and Goodfellas. I must say that the Blus look and sound way better than their HD DVD counterparts. Im not just saying that because Ive gone Blu Ray either.

I also own all three on both formats and I gotta call BS on your 'way better'... PQ wise most would be hard pressed to see a difference in Transformers without studying in slow motion with their faces pressed to the screen. The TrueHD audio however is a nice step up from the HD DVD... but here is where I truly call your call your bluff.... The Departed and Goodfellas share the same exact VC-1 video encodes... aka port overs.

The DD audio is also the same bitrate 620kbps on both Goodfellas...

The PCM on The Departed is the same but plays back at a slightly higher volume level, once level matched (without dialnorm engaged) it sounds... are you ready? ...The Same... Lossless is lossless.

Way better? I don't think so...
