they seem to be targetting October 25 as release date.

If all goes smoothly, then US/Canada release could be possible before Halloween.

and lol, comes with free Blu-ray disc "The Fifth Element".

Is the 5th element free only if you ordered from sonystyle or do I get from amazon too? Don't really care since it was a bad transfer, but maybe I can sell it at record exchange and get a few bones if they don't know.

It may be in the box, but you won't know until it ships. The Panasonic deal was unknown until people started getting them with the nice surprise.

Are there any advantages to getting the bdp-s2 in 4-5 mo. if you only have a 1080i tv and plan to use analogue cables for the new audio formats?

Only if they add TrueHD and DTS MA internal decoder support.

This is what the sonystyle site says about the bdp-s1

The new BDP-S1 Blu-ray Disc home player from Sony offers a host of new high-definition entertainment possibilities. The BDP-S1 features 1920 x 1080p output, the highest HD signal output currently available through a HDMI™ connection. If your HD-capable television does not have an HDMI connection, you can still get the Blu-ray experience - the 1080i analog output allows for HD-capable televisions without HDMI to enjoy Blu-ray Disc features. The BDP-S1 is also compatible with standard DVDs with the added feature of 1080p upscaling through HDMI, which gives new life to existing DVDs libraries3. BD-Java interactivity will further enhance the BD entertainment experience, allowing for development of advanced interactive features. Its sophisticated design, with blue glass front, will compliment any decor. Bring your home entertainment experience to a new level with the BDP-S1 Blu-ray Disc home player.

It doesn't have TrueHD either. It has neither of the new lossless audio codecs. It only extracts the core, legacy codecs - DD and dts .

I was told by Jim Pullman that the bdp-s1 will be able to decode the new audio formats in the player then pass them over 6ch analouge it even says it here http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/sacd_cables.html

Supports Blu-Ray and HD-DVD Surround sound Audio Formats:
Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS, and DTS-HD

Can someone else clear this up for us? It says right there Dolby® Digital Plus(Dolby® Digital audio stream only), Dolby® TrueHD (Dolby® Digital audio stream only) dts®-HD --- (dts audio stream only) Digital Out and decoding capability
iy has the decodeing capability. Why would it support these formats if no current reciever can decode them?

Where does it say anything at that link about the Sony Blu-ray player? Those are listings for multichannel-cable snakes.

It says 'Dolby Digital stream only' and 'dts audio stream only'. Like I said, this means it is extracting the 'core' stream from the advanced codecs, meaning, it will only pass the standard Dolby Digital and dts signals embedded in the advanced codecs, which can then be decoded by any receiver or pre/pro. It is not decoding TrueHD or DTS-HD MA.

under the features list, I think it has all. People on this forum told me the player decodes it and then sends it. You have to do it this way because optical/coax doesn't have enough bandwith to support the data rate. It supports both dolby digital stream only and DD+

and the link says:Supports Blu-Ray and HD-DVD Surround sound Audio Formats:
Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS, and DTS-HD same w/all the other ones.

afaik, it will internally decode the HD audio formats and pass them over the analog outs. it can't do it over hdmi since it's not 1.3 or optical/coax because of bandwith.

You only need hdmi 1.3 to pass the codecs to the receiver. If the player can decode the codecs, then it can be passed as pcm via hdmi (1.3 version not needed).

So then I am correct in my assumption? Here is the thread where we discussed it before. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=2357 So I must be right.

Not necessarily, because it doesn't say that it decodes TrueHD or DTS-HD MA and passes them through analogue or via HDMI. Every mention of those codecs in the specs list only refers to the player passing the signal as either standard DD or standard dts.

I'm afraid we all just have to wait until the player is actually released to know for sure what it will or won't do. These companies have been very poor at providing accurate specs on these forthcoming Blu-ray players. It was unknown what the Panasonic would actually do, even when they were already shipping to retailers.

Exactly. HDMI 1.3 is only needed to pass the undecoded codec to a receiver or pre/pro. However, the specs for the Sony don't say that it will pass the lossless codecs as PCM or analogue. They only refer to 'Dolby Digital stream' and 'dts stream'.

Again, Exactly true !!! This is why some of us are waiting for the second generation player from Sony (BDP-S2) in early spring 2007, incorporating the HDMI 1.3 chip. Concurrently, at that time, we'll start seeing Pre-Amp/Processors and Receivers utilizing the HDMI 1.3 chip. When that marriage occurs, every codec will be decodeable and processed and can travel by way of one, single HDMI interconnect. Until then we have to accept the lessor technology feature set. This is my understanding.

This is why I decided to go with the Panasonic. I have no plans of upgrading my A/VR anytime soon as it is barely 4-years old. It has two sets of multichannel analogue inputs (1 x 5.1; 1 x 7.1), plus I have a Zektor 3 x 1, 5.1 analogue multichannel switcher. The Panasonic will decode all the codecs and pass them via the analogue 7.1 outs after the promised firmware upgrade. It plays CDs and DVD-As, does bass management and time alignment, and supports BD-J. It is fully-featured enough for me to get me through a year or two until I'm ready for a second player that, quite frankly, I hope will be a universal that does both formats and costs far less
