There's been quite a few discussions on the Alien Franchise. I enjoyed the first 3, but thought that Alien Resurrection was terrible. I've only seen the entire movie twice. I'm going to watch it again shortly.
The question, did the the "Newborn" ruin the movie? Last edited by Grumpz; 10-19-2009 at 07:21 PM. |

I really really wanted to like Alien 4 (J.P Jeunet being one of my fav French directors), but ... it just didn't work for me.
I think it's the entire tone that didn't match the movie franchise to me. All the little "comedy" bits were just over the top to me (the breath analyzer, etc.). The acting too seemed over the top (a stapple of Jeunet's in your face camera sometimes, but it just really didn't fit in for me). As per the "Newborn", it was ok to me (bit lackluster in design tbh), the one standout element being the acting of S. Weaver when she discovers her other clones "discarded", and decides to do some mercy killing out of rage with a flame thrower. Big emotionnal moment, that "almost" saved the movie. Almost ![]() |

There was no horror, the first three at least had some scary elements because the Aliens were almost impossible to kill. They get killed off to easily in the 4th, BIG mistake. Jeunet is a great director, but his style didn't fit the franchise, there has to be some sort of realism involved. |

The shock factor was completely removed from this film for the simple fact that there was nothing in this movie that we've already scene in the previous three. The film also suffers from "modern times", and that kills the movie for me. I like a slowly paced and edited film, not a Wang Chung video.
Alien 3 always get a bad wrap but IMO the extended cut found on the Quadrilogy Boxset saves this film. |

For what it was worth, I was enjoying it somewhat until the newborn. That completely ruined things for me.
Nothing would of moved it up in my rankings, however I actually hated the movie because of it, and felt ripped off when I left the theatre. The one thing I did like was the non CGI Aliens. They looked fantastic. |

I love the idea and with a great story and script this could be fantastic. I'll be in line opening night for the pre-quel. I think Scott if he in fact is involved, because he sounds busy as hell, will do a great job.

Man...I hate this movie from beginning to end!
![]() I do remember reading somewhere that the studio kept on badgering the director to do this movie and he kept on refusing and asking them why they wanted him to do it and not somebody else because he would not be the right one(apparently the studio wanted another unknown director like Scott, Cameron and Fincher). Well he finally either just gave up refusing their pleas or they made him an offer that he could not refuse. Ron Perlman is the only thing that I kinda liked about this film. Here are a few 'fun facts' from IMDB: - Winona Ryder nearly drowned during the filming of the underwater scene. - Actor Ron Perlman nearly drowned while filming the underwater sequence. At one point, when trying to surface, he hit his head on a sprinkler in the ceiling, knocking him out cold. - Jean-Pierre Jeunet's first solo credit as a director. - The genitals of the Newborn had to be digitally removed. - The character of Dr. Wren was originally written for Bill Murray, with the intent of reuniting him with Sigourney Weaver, his co-star from Ghost Busters (1984). - Danny Boyle and David Cronenberg were an early choice to direct but they passed. - To achieve the shot where the camera travels inside Leland Orser to see the alien fetus about to be birthed, Orser had a camera shoved down his throat and then pulled out. This was then reversed. - Sigourney Weaver made the behind-the-back half-court basketball shot successfully after two weeks of basketball practice, tutored by a basketball coach. Her conversion rate during that two weeks was about one shot in from every six. When the day came to shoot the scene, director Jean-Pierre Jeunet wanted to have the ball dropped in from above, rather than wait for Weaver to sink the shot herself, which "would probably take about 200 takes". Weaver insisted that the she could get the shot in herself, which she was finally allowed to do. She sunk the shot on the very first take, even though she was six feet further past the three-point line. Ron Perlman was completely stunned (and thoroughly impressed), and turned directly at the camera and broke character, saying, "Oh my God!" The editors looked at the shot and decided that there was "enough room to get the scissors in". Weaver was excited about making the shot, but Jeunet was concerned that audiences would believe the shot to be faked due to the ball leaving the frame. Upon Weaver's insistence, he kept the shot as it was. Weaver described the miracle shot as "one of the best moments in her life", after her wedding day and the birth of her daughter, of course. . |
