I always thought that the aspect ratio was a constraint due to the fact the director wanted to take a wider looking perspective, so you're saying I'm wrong in this assumption?

In using the word "constraint", yes. The rest of it, no.

The wider CGI films are that way because the director wanted to show a wider perspective in the film.
