It's not like these are the first non-animated movies to get a DVD pack-in. Child's Play that was released recently got one also.
ok, well you just argued my point: the house has a blu-ray player and a DVD player. so it has already adopted the format. hence, the inclusion of the DVD in the combo itself did nothing to make them adopt the format, as they already had the blu-ray player in the home (for other reasons, such as desire for better PQ/AQ, etc). it doesnt matter if they watch the DVD in bed or give it away, the end result is the same: they dont adopt the format because of the DVD in the packet.

Because these don't require any work to prepare for release.

I love the Blu-ray/DVD combo offerings, especially from Disney/Pixar. I print our artwork and give the DVD to my kid. I keep the Blu. Everybody wins.

Then you have people like my sister-in-law. She does not have a Blu-ray player, yet. She still bought the combo of "Up" so she would be ready when she does buy a player.

I think its great that they are doing both the bd and dvd. not everyone owns bluray. i wish paramount did that with the new star trek movie.

Do you somehow think just owning a player grows the format?

Why do you think the companies that make the players make very little money on them.

Or in case of the PS3, actually loses the company money due to production costs.

It's more likely to get them to buy a movie though. So it does help grow the format.

Selling the media is more important in the long run than selling the players.

I honestly thought someone would end up getting a BLU/DVD combo for it.

There were early rumors that Wal-Mart would, but alas they were just that.

your first 3 questions are way off topic (no offense). regarding the 4th question, i just disagree and stated my reasons, we're free to agree to disagree.

They are not in any way, shape, or form off topic. I'm pointing out your logic faults.

Studios are all about making money (unfortunately). Jurassic Park would make Universal more money than rehashing crappy titles for people who are still "on the fence".

I dont like DVD combos, it's a waste of a disc cause im never going to use it. i know why it's done, does't mean i have to like it.

Is this only going to be for catalogs or new releases also?

I got to say I think its great...

If someone doesn't yet have a blu ray player, they can choose to get this and have that blu for when they do get a player and be happy with the dvd until then.

Some people only have 1 blu ray player and a dvd player in a 2nd room.

Some people like to rip the dvd to a hard drive attached to their HT, yes there are digital copies with some but the quality is less than a dvd.

Some people have kids and can give the dvd to them to use.

This in no way means studios are now not focusing on releasing your favourite catalog title, its a dvd thats already made, they are just throwing it in there.

Of all the BD/DVD combos I have bought the only ones that are slightly more expensive are the Disney ones.

I never thought I would see the day when people would complain about getting extra stuff.

I'll take this over the DVD being glued to the other side of a HD disc anyday. HD DVD combos were shit.

It'll be a good short term deal for the foreseeable future. It's really just a bonus right now, it'd be nice to have both formats until I get a portable blu-ray player to replace my portable DVD one. As long as the blu-rays are priced the same, with a bonus DVD included, it's a good thing.

I like the idea, but I rather have the company move forward with un-released movies, rather than go back and re-release movies that are already out on BD. Either way, it's a win-win situation for the average buyer.

I wish every Blu-ray came with a DVD copy (including the ones I double-dipped from DVD in the first place)

I think it's great that Universal is doing this (although I'm not too excited about the titles mentioned so far)

Not exactly flying off the store shelves and most of them have been previously released on HD-DVD so I can understand them going with this it will certainly help them sell better IMO. If anything this will help more catalog releases get released so they can clear space with all of these titles nobody is buying.
I am quoting myself because it seems like people still aren't getting it. This is just a REPACKAGING of the current releases. It isn't like they are making millions of new Blu-ray's of these movies therefore making the chances of something like a Jurassic Park release an even longer wait. I really have no idea why people are so against this it only HELPS sell these movies that nobody is really buying.

Why are you spending this time posting this, when you could be doing something constructive like sending letters and signing petitions for Universal to release Jurassic Park........ Sheesh

Exactly. The idea that it is making them hold off on JP is ridiculous.

It's a simple repackaging of a Blu-Ray with a DVD. It's not taking resources.

As long as it doesn't raise the price of the blu-ray I'm fine with it. In fact, for the animated titles I'm really glad they come with the dvd as well so we can take it with us on the road as my 2 year old daughter can watch them on the portable dvd player in the car.
