After a *very* late night playing with my new PSB Image (discontinued model) speakers, I think I have them set up nicely (at least to my ears), but thought I'd get some input just to make sure I wasn't screwing things up. As with any new speaker install, the biggest challenges (at least for me) seem to be getting my speakers to play nice with Audyssey (I use an Onkyo 606) & getting the crossover settings/bass management just right.

Knowing that speaker placement can influence things, how do these crossover settings look? Any obvious red flags?

Fronts (T45s) - 60Hz (Audyssey wanted these at "Full")
Center (C40) - 60 Hz
L/R Satellites (B15s) - 60Hz
LFE Filter 120 Hz

Subsonic 6i Crossover Knob setting - ~65 Hz
Subsonic 6i Sub Volume control - just above the first mark beyond 0
Subsonic 6i Phase setting - 0
(by the way, front control knobs on a sub are a *fantastic* idea!)

I fiddled with the speaker crossovers at 80Hz, but to my ear, the sound has more dimensional depth & detail (read: "sparkle") with them set at 60Hz.

Even before I adjusted the speaker settings, it was obvious that they were worlds better than my old Onkyo HTIB speakers (which actually weren't all that bad when hooked up to a new receiver & good source). Stupidly good detail levels & tight bass abound, which is just the way I like it (I used Grado RS-1 Headphones for critical listening prior to my getting these speakers). They really make my SACDs live up to their name!

I'm very pleased & I can't wait to rediscover the rest of my music/Blu-Ray/DVD collection!

EDIT: I just realized I may need to adjust the LFE Input/Crossover Bypass switch position to fine tune my bass management (I made all previous adjustments with the switch in the 'off' position). After re-reading the manual, it looks like I want the switch in the 'on' position. Any suggestions?

I have the same rears and center and I have them set to 80Hz but if you prefer 60Hz all around then so be it.

Now that I think I have my LFE filter settings properly adjusted on the 6i (sub filter bypass ON), my adjustments have migrated a bit & I think I am settling in to some nice sounding crossover settings. I still managed to retain dimensionality & detail, but the bass seems to be even more refined. I suspect it is the change to my fronts that is making the biggest difference here. The settings are currently:

Fronts (T45s) - 50Hz
Center (C40) - 80 Hz
L/R Satellites (B15s) - 80Hz
(thanks walmat for the heads-up on these last two settings...combined with the front adjustments it sounds very nice)

I'm going to critically listen to these settings for several days before making any additional adjustments. But I think I may be on to something.

Slightly off topic...do any of you use Audyssey 2EQ? It does wonders for my movie-watching experience, but it really does wacky things to my multichannel music discs (like overemphasize the satellites). I usually just end up shutting off the Equalizer completely for multichannel music. Makes me wish I had the extra coin for a receiver with Audyssey MultEQ where I have a bit more control!

enjoy and let me know what you think about the sonic differences!
okbarshabazz I connected the UPA-7 and I did notice the difference in the sonics. The sound seems to be crisp and clear. When you go that route I assume you would notice it too. Check out the new pictures aded to my HT.

Very Nice! -I'm officially jealous! I can't wait until I can add one to my system and hear what these speakers can really do!

P.S. nice rack! (no pun intended) also, your wire management is ridiculous!

Default CEDIA 2009 - Atlanta

just thought I would share... I was wandering around the CEDIA floor in Atlanta today, and tapped the shoulder of one of the "reps" at the PSB booth and sure enough, it was Paul Barton himself. We chatted and he gave me his business card. It reads: Founder, Chief Engineer.

I thought it was pretty cool.

I am in the process of planning a dedicated home theater room, moving from a living room setup. My setup for the current living room is Onkyo 605 receiver, Polk Monitor 60 fronts, Polk CS2 Center, Polk Monitor 30 surrounds, and Polk PSW10 subwoofer.

I am toying with the idea of a whole new sound system for the dedicated room, and I am looking closely at PSB. My preliminary plan is Image T65 fronts, Image C60 center, Image S50 surrounds, and Elemental Designs A2-300 subwoofer (which I will be purchasing regardless of which set of speakers make their way into the dedicated theater).

I was wondering two things that you may have some insight on:

- For a total of $1847 USD (from DMC Electronics and Elemental Designs), is the PSB setup a worthy upgrade to the current Polk setup? Is there a better choice for the ~$2000 price range?
- Will I need a more powerful receiver than the Onkyo 605 (which I believe rates 90 watts per channel)? Possibly even a seperate amplifier?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

I tend to prefer PSBs 5.25 inch woofer vs their 6.5 inch cause they seem to have a more natural midrange (not that the 6.5 is bad but three of them in the T65 is a bit much). Epecially if you pair the 5.25 inch with a sweet sub, which you are.

My point is you can save some money and go with:

1) T45 / C40 combo and S50 surrounds

2) New PSB Image T5/C5 combo with S50 surrounds.
You can usually get %20 off MSRP. So try to price out DMC, saturday audio or a local dealer.

Front three should come close to this:
899 +375= 1274
20% off 1274= $1019

1019(fronts) + 400 (sub) + 529 (surrounds) = 1948

Id DEFINITELY go with option two!

Hey Daddy-
What fronts and center would you suggest as a match to these? I really want the imagines (more for looks and WAF), but would consider these if i got a good deal. I'm sure they're better than my klipsch, no?

I see where some of the image line comes in maple and sienna/cherry and some don't. Looks like the fronts and center are available in this finish, but not the surrounds. I know it sounds picky, but i wanna move away from the all black thing.

The Image speakers for your front is a good match for the S50 surround. The Image series were recently updated and come in dark cherry and look like the more expensive Imagine and Synchrony series. However, you can save money on the older Image series.

Also, check Ebay. You can find brand new PSB speakers at a discount.

Ahh, so that's the difference between the S50 and the S5. The look. I wondered why the specs were nearly identical but about $200 more expensive. Maybe by the time i pull the trigger, the S5's will be cheaper.
thanks Daddy.
