I think probably the best modern debut. It is incredible to see that film knowing that it was his first directed film--he already had a sense of style and everything is just mind-blowing.

Well, he was already a theater veteran. However not everyone can translate theater experience to film. What blew me away was just how cinematic the film is. His choice of angles and coverage suggest that he was far more experienced in film but indees it washis first. I guess some people are just born with it.

I think having Conrad L. Hall as the cinematographer helps a lot .

Yeah, wondered when that was gonna be mentioned. Hard to argue with Kane. Pretty ridiculous really.

Memento was not Nolan's first film. The Following is Nolan's first, which I would add to one of the better directorial debuts. A great movie.

Hoffman's short role in Hard Eight was so dam funny. He was also funny in Punch Drunk Love as well.

Darren Aronofsky for Pi.

I'm at work, I'll have to think about this.

Along with such films as "Reservoir Dogs" and "THX 1138", one of favorite directoral debuts was Steven Spielberg's short subject "The Eyes", starring Joan Crawford on the Night Gallery pilot episode in 1969. I also enjoyed (one of ?) his first movies, "Duel".
