Default ps2 to ps3 upconversion

hi all,
last night me and my buddy felt like playing Marvel: Ultimate Alliance realll bad and it was late so we only had the ps2 version that we bought before we had our ps3's. this was the first time we popped a ps2 game in the ps3 and im not gonna lie... it looked a lot worse than it originally did on ps2. has anyone else noticed this? or are we doing something wrong?

The PS2 games I've upscaled on my PS3 always looked quite a bit better than usual... I have the 60 gig PS3 with the hardware backwards compatibility. Do you have the 80 gig with the software emulation? Because I heard that's not as good for older games.

How do you currently have Settings > Game Settings set?

Assuming you're using an HDTV:

PS/PS2 Upscaler should be 'Normal' for 4:3 games, 'Full Screen' for 16:9 set games.
PS/PS2 Smoothing really depends on the game.

When you played the game on PS2, were you using the same TV or a standard def CRT?

orignally the ps1 and ps2 games looked crappy on the ps3. Alot of jaggies. One of the firmware updates fixed this issue quite a while back Make sure you have the latest firmware patch.

PS/PS2 Upsaler was on normal
PS/PS2 Smoothing was on
With latest software 1.93

The game looked bad.
We messed with analog/digital singals and it helped a bit, but still looked worse than PS2.

Yea on HDTV

We tried it again and it was still terrible. I even tried changing games.

OK, I played a lot of PS2 games before the upscaling and smoothing exist. it was well ugly. Now, it's good.

Are you comparing it to output from an actual PS2? Or just your memory of what PS2 output used to look like?

It's like fond memories of old cartoons from when you were a kid. When you go back and watch them again now, you discover your memory of how well rendered they were is usually shattered...

I suspect there's nothing wrong with your PS3. PS2 graphics do look terrible after you've become spoiled on PS3 graphics.

I also tried all settings, but dont like the results. I actually like my PS2 connected through component alot better (in playing PS2 games).

Turn upscaling off. Seriously on some tv's it's better to just let the tv handle the 480i.

This article has a whole bunch of pics of non and upscaled side by side. Also a comparison on smoothing.

when upscaled and smoothed it just looks blury to me. I hate to say it, but the 360's upscaling ability for games is infinitely better.

when you design for 360, of cos it should look right.
the 360 cannot even run the original xbox game, so where does upscaling come in ?

my guess is previously when play ps1/2, our tv are smaller or crt, they look right, but now you running sd on hd, any stretching will look terrible.
i download the Xi demo from psn, wow, it look like shit.

There are many game for the original Xbox that can play on the 360 and yes, some are optimized in 720p.

Try Halo 2 (designed for xbox) on a xbox and then on a 360, infinitely better. My copy of DOA2 on Xbox looks damn near as good as the DOA4 for 360 on my 360 upscaled to 1080p from it's native 480p. The 360 also uses anti-aliasing during it's upconversion which helps with reduction of the jaggies. Hardware scaling owns software scaling hands down. ps3 does a decent job but appears to soften the Picture, the 360 does not soften the image. I would much rather do BW compatiblity on 360, just my opinion, and am sure the shared opinion of those owning both consoles.
