The thing is, I got 5.1 stereo when I had my Samsung upconvert DVD player using the exact same setup, player to TV (HDMI), TV to receiver (Optical). And my TV does do the conversion.

When I disable the the Linear PCM setting on the PS3 and click on DTS and Dolby 5.1, I get true 5.1 separation. When playing a game, I have to switch everything back and disable DTS and Dolby.

My complaint is the fact that I have to make the adjustments manually everytime instead of the PS3 autodetecting the best format. To me, it sounds like something Sony needs to work on in future revisions.
