Well I'm in the US and have a US PS3 (which doesn't play 50hz content) and I bought the just-released Gavin & Stacey Complete Series box. When I put the Series 1 disc in, it gives me nothing but a black screen. I don't know if this is to do with the PS3 being unable to play 50hz PAL content or if that means the disc is region locked and I just flushed some money down the drain.

I would imagine if the disc was region-locked some kind of message would come up. Instead it stays on a black screen and when I push Top Menu it says the function isn't allowed here. So what do ya reckon?

I must admit that it doesn't sound good, but I've never tried to play anything non-Region A in my PS3, so I'm not sure what you would see displayed if it was locked. I sent a note to 2 Entertain regarding the compatibility and they decided to just ignore me, so I ditched out on the idea of purchasing it. You may want to contact the creator of this thread who has ordered it too.

There's a post on the BBC America site forum that says:

I really hope we get a US Blu-Ray release. I heard the UK release is not region locked, but it is 1080i/50Hz, which the US PS3 doesn't support.
That truly sucks.

Welp, when I put in the Series 3 disc a "only for home use" message comes up followed by the 2|Entertain logo preroll. After that it's just blank screen again. There's no message that it's a region incompatibility that's keeping me from playing this so...maybe I'll try and play it on a blu-ray player at work to see what it gives me before I run out and get a different standalone BRD player.

Many thanks for your help quirk.

I had the same problem with "Being Human" on Region B Blu-Ray. Unfortunately, even tho BBC Blu releases are actually not region-locked, they are encoded at 50hz instead of 60, which makes them unplayable on a Region-A player unless your player can somehow output 50hz. But when I popped the Blu into my Momitsu 799 player (set to Region-B) it worked just fine.

Can't stand that the US PS3 can't even do PAL on a regular region 0 DVD--and the 50Hz stuff is annoying--really wanted Being Human and some other UK series. I wish 2entertain would switch back to not doing the 50Hz. Their original releases like Hotel Babylon and Robin Hood worked fine on the US PS3.

Any idea if the Momitsu 799 still gives audio at 1.5x speed? That's one thing I really like about the PS3--the ability to watch DVDs/Blu/Streaming at 1.5x speed while still maintaining the audio--a time saver when trying to watch a lot of TV show episodes.
