Default Is the Slim PS3 louder than regular PS3s?

I bought a slim as a second PS3, and because it was reported that it made half as much noise when playing BDs...but mine is loud as hell!
I used to think my 40GB was pretty loud, but whenever I turn on my Slim it immediately kicks in a fan and sounds even worse when a disc is inside. With my 40GB, it makes no noise at start up, and you can hardly hear a disc being read.

Are the slims noisy, or did I get stuck with a loud one?

Sorry to say I can't confirm this but I do hate it when the fans turn on during a movie, depending on your setup and where you keep your PS3 it can be very annoying and you may have to turn the movie up!

I upgraded from an original 60gb to a 120gb slim and it is much quieter.

How often do you clean it and where is the PS3 placed? Manual says keep it atleast 6 inches away from the wall or whatever is behind it. And for safety keep it further or if possible away from an AV reciever.

I clean it maybe once a month, with a vacuum. It's out in the open, plenty of space to breath, I don't think it's an error on my part.

I clean mine once a week because we have carpet. I also use a cloth to wipe the vents on all sides. Haven't used a vacuum yet. Instead of using a vacuum I would recommend compressed air, vacuum might be a little strong.

I don't know, I really don't think it has to do with being clean. It's not like my room is flying with dust.

Well, you could exchange it at the place where you bought it if you still have the reciept or send it to Sony.

It's not supposed to make noise as the fat one so something might not be right.

GAH! I wish I didn't have to do that, they always send back refurbs instead of fixing the actual console. If only I knew someone with a Slim, so I could run them side by side.

Search some videos at YouTube, I'm sure you'll find one. And don't take my word for it lol. I'm not saying something is wrong with it.

Before you do anything though clean it properly and see if it makes a difference.

well after doing some research on YouTube it appears the Slims ARE louder! Damn it! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZkLivlwKxU&NR=1

Awh man, the main reason I bought a Slim was because I thought it was quieter...should have just stuck with the Gunmetal Grey PS3.

Yeah, but you said you own the 60GB. 60GBs were way noisier than 40GBs.

I had a 40gb as well. Upgraded to the 60gb when I found a new one for sale and then sold that to get a slim. I literally can't hear my PS3 slim and I'm 4 feet from it. It is ultra quiet.

The PS3 in the video could use some space on the right side. If you look on the bottom of the sides there are open holes on the slim which could help it breath a little.

I've got a 60gb original. It sounds like a frakking vacuum. The fix: Louder speakers. : )

Are you for real!? Theres not even any vents on the top of the PS3 (when you stand it up, or right if it's lying down like in the video). I miss the days when you could hide a console in an entertainment center without having to worry about heating issues.

Here's another video where both consoles are in the open http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zquzx5-rHk8
