What part of SE GA are you from? I'm from Camden County, which is on the coast at the GA/FL line.
I grew up in New Jersey, but have been living in Statesboro for about 8 years now. I'm an hour west of Savannah.

The deeper you go into these smaller communities is where you will find the varying accents and dialects and in most cases it's generational. You will find someone who has the exact dialect and mannerisms as Renee Zelwegger's role in Cold Mountain.

I think one of the best movies that really got a grasp of Small Southern Communities is "A Time To Kill". Not the racial aspect of the film but the socialization of the characters. The little things in this movie make this a great film. Everyone eating lunch at one time during the day. This happens in the area I work. The area pretty much shuts down and every one goes to their favorite buffet for lunch. The Small town lawyer's office, the "accross the tracks" mentality of these communities. Great film!!!!

Val Kilmer in Streets of Blood was pretty bad. He did good with Tombstone, but this was terrible.

I know what you mean. Sometimes it's hard to believe that those areas still exist, but they do.

And I know exactly where you are. I had a couple of friends go to college at GA Southern.

His accent wasn't that great in The Ghost and The Darkness either. Some people can pull off a fake accent and some people can't. I think he's one of the latter.

Ewan McGregor in Big Fish - LOVE the film, but at times his accent made me cringe

Keanu holds pretty much every "worst of" title. If he's done it he's done it chances are he did it worse than anyone else has.

IMO one of the best Southern--or I should say "rural"--accents was pulled off by Kelly Macdonald in No Country for Old Men, especially considering she's Scottish.

Jude Law's accent was very convincing. His character had a very humbled way about himself, very similar to the character Private Blithe from "Band of Brothers". Speaking of, that actor who played Blithe is a british actor I believe.

The big problem is like someone before me stated, is that the accent varies from state to state in the south. Alabama is different from South Carolina is different from Georgia and on and on. Even worse is that within each state the accent varies with most counties and cities. I live in SC and in the 3 counties surrounding me you can tell little nuances in the accents.

I do however agree with Nicholas Cage just being the absolute worst. I don't think I have ever heard another person ever with an accent that bad.

Cool thread. Off topic a little.... Sometimes I am blown away by British and Aussie actors that nail the American accent. Amurikan is difficult.

It's off topic -- not a Southern accent, but an English one:

Keano Reeves in Dracula. Worst. Accent. Ever.

I always believed that most consider Dick Van Dike accent in Mary Poppins as the worst ever by an actor?

Anna Paquin's in the X-men flicks seemed inconsistent to me.

It WAS bad, but maybe since it was a musical/comedy it didn't hurt the film like Keanu did in Dracula. Between the accent and the comb-some-white-stuff-through-your-hair make-up job, he's like something from a high-school play.
