Worst southern accent in a movie... - Blu-ray Forum

Being a southerner, this may be something that I find more irritating than others. However nothing grates on my nerves more than an actor or actress trying to speak in a southern accent, who is clearly not southern.

The absolute worst southern accent award has to go to Nicolas Cage in Con Air. Oh my god, it's horrible!! Second place would have to go to Keanu Reeves in The Devil's Advocate. Infact, pretty much everyone in that movie with sounded fake with the exception of the woman who played his mother (who I'm guessing really is southern).

I agree with Cage, but I recently watched Driving Miss Daisy and there is nothing worse than Dan Akroyd trying to do a southern accent. (I hated him as Jimmy Carter on SNL, too!!)

Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump was pretty bad, also.

Not the worst, I am sure, but the most annoying for me was Tom Hanks as Professor G.H. Dorr in the Ladykillers.

I also remember a few down-right tragedies in Steel Magnolias. One being the film itself.

On a side note, I will say this: Oh, Brother Where Art Thou? had some of the BEST southern accents I have ever heard, specifically Turturro and Nelson.

In Cold Mountain, Nicole Kidman's accent was marginal, especially compared to Renee Zellweger, who seemed to do OK.

Living in South East Georgia, I can tell you that they both along with Jude Law nailed their accents.

Mekhi Phifer's southern accent in the movie "Tuskegee Airmen" was not good at all. You could hear his North East dialect overtake his attempt of a southern drawl.

any time anyone does a new orleans accent...they usually sound like they are from Georgia or South Carolina....and they are always sweating and drinking a mint julep...

I think part of the problem also is that the actors/actresses don't just go for a regular southern accent. They go for the genteel southern, which some people from the south can't even pull off very well.

What part of SE GA are you from? I'm from Camden County, which is on the coast at the GA/FL line.
