We will see how scorched I will be when they say 'oh hes a BD supporter, this is just FUD', and I get banned with my 2 post counts over there lol. Maybe I should start a poll on how fast my post will be deleted and me banned for life lol.

This is a huge blow to HD DVD if this holds true, or Toshiba finds a way around the lens issue. Can very well determine the outcome of the format war.

Sir, I suspect $100 to $150 milion was tons more than they'd make in profit off BD sales for the next 18 months. All they have to release is catalog titles, Shrek III, Transformers, and Knocked Up. I'd have bought all three if on blu along with another 100,000 maybe so that's what: half a mil and change in profit? In 15 months, we'll all go back to buying their titles one way or the other. It's not like I can get Shrek III from Sony.

I own an hd dvd player and if they start releasing movies on these discs then I think my hd dvd buying days are over...no way would I buy a new player!

No studio has announced any title using TL51 discs. Who knows when/if that'll happen. I have a feeling it may never see the light of day.

Wrong buddy, we wont have to. Current players will play all Blu ray movies. The only thing is that they might/will not have access to special features, and not all of us are really that interested on them on the first place.

My feeling is that this isn't something that the HD DVD supporter wanted because they believe it is needed, rather to take away a talking point for the BD crowd.

The way I see it, the "talking point" response of HD-DVD has been shot by the anounce of BD-100 a mere 2-3 weeks after their anounce of a theoric TL-51, and obliterated after the prototype was shown another week later, alongside TDK anouncing its first tests and a very possible compatibility with existing players only needing a soft patch.
Some HD-DVD suporters seem to revert to their "30Gb is enough" motto, but they know full well that having all of a HD movie plus bonuses in HD in one disc is huge, as well as fitting an entire season of your fav. TV show in HD in 40% less discs (BD-50 vs HDDVD 30) would reduce the price of a set drastically... Let's not even talk about a 100gb with the price of a full Season set in mind.... Can you say all of House HD on 4x BD-100 vs 12x HD-DVDs ?

TL51 success or failure will not determine the outcome of the war, IMO. Storage capacity is NOT HD-DVD's biggest problem. BANDWIDTH IMO is HD-DVD's biggest problem. Most of HD-DVDs other problems are listed in my sig (in no particular order).

Toshiba/HD-DVD have enough problems with the "write" drives for the 30gig discs. Add another layer and they'll have even more problems. I don't see TL51 discs ever making it to market in any form. Kind of like Warner's oft-delayed TotalHD discs. TL51 and TotalHD look nice on paper though.

The HD-DVD TL51 disc was a direct counter to BDs 50gig dual-layer disc no doubt. A normal dual-layer HD-DVD disc holds 30gig of data, or 15gig per layer. If they were going to do a "regular" triple layer disc they would have had 15gig+15gig+15gig - a TL45gig disc. This is still shy of BD's 50gig so HD-DVD/Toshiba had to squeeze more data onto each layer, pushing the "data area" closer to the edges of the disc (a la 80min CD) in order to get more capacity so that they could have a disc that has more storage than Blu-ray.
