Default Help with Subwoofer Placement

I posed the following in my own Home Theater Thread but no one has addressed it so I thought that I would post it here so that others could address my problem.

Thanks for any suggestions and input.

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=125369

I am having some problem in deciding where to place the 2 Epik Conquest Conquest Subwoofers that are 22"W X 31"D X 36"H. They are to sit on Subtraps that have been built to 22" W X 30"D X 12"H. So the subwoofers will sit about 48.5"- 49" off of the floor with the footers. I do not have many options to place these monsters. The 3 racks of equipment sit on the wall perpendicular to the wall with the main speakers and center channel speaker. The racks will be approximately 98" (8' 2" long in contiguous length).

If you look at the diagram below of the layout, you will see that initially I had planned to place the subwoofers in the corners beside the extremely large main towers. Also, I do not anticipate that the tower on the right will quite reach the same distance from the wall as the main component rack.

The big problem with this is that the subwoofer on the right will be only about 13" or so from the front main rack. The amps on the rack sit at about 42" off of the floor and the driver of the subwoofer is 18" in diameter so it is quite close to the amps. It is possible, but not a very good option to angle the subwoofers toward the center of the room, but there is not very much space.

The other option is to move the main speakers a little further to the left and right and move the subwoofers to the inner side of the main towers. Now we get into a height issue with the subwoofers being 48.5- 49" off of the floor. If I either get a Projector and Projection screen of or the HDI 100-inch, laser-driven 3D HDTV they will need to be raised higher than would be the norm to clear the subwoofers. The subwoofers could be flipped on their side, but that would not be my preference.

In either position for the subwoofers I believe that I can run a long enough power cord to the 20 amp outlets at about 22" from the left and right corners of the front of the room.

In the mean time, I still intend to get the cart below to mount my Pioneer Elite Kuro PRO-111FD 50" TV on. Since it looks like this will be for some time, I expect to place the Center Channel Speaker in front of the TV and the Cart.

I would very much like your input.

Rich

I prefer the middle of the side walls. Look at the diagrams below and see if you can rearrange the room to place the subwoofers in one of the better positions as suggested in the diagrams. Placement of the subwoofers is more important placement of amplifiers or equipment racks. The only problem with amps and racks is longer cables.

A very good option for equalizing subwoofers is the Velodyne SMS-1 Subwoofer Parametric Equalizer/Analyzer. It only costs $500.

I created a thread for it.

Default Subwoofers & Room SetUp

Hello

Your loudspeakers and your subwoofers, should be in the 14'7' short wall; never on the long wall.

I just thought that you should consider this, which is basic to good sound in any room.

Regarding your placement of the subwoofers; they should be close to the loudspeakers, and several feet from both the front wall and the side wall. Moving them around, balancing the available settings of the subwoofer, will be the path to the best bass or whatever bass characteristic that you like.

Thank You

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the recommendations. Unfortunately due to the room dimensions and all of the equipment, I am forced to place the Projection Screen or large TV on the long wall with the main tower speakers. The speakers are so large that I can not fit them onto the short axis wall along with the Subwoofers and the Center Channel Speaker or be able to keep the main towers far enough from the corners on the the short wall without possibly interfering with the Projection screen. If I placed the Main Towers on the short axis wall I may only have about 11" from the corners and that would not be my preference. The racks on the left side of the room on the long wall would also have blocked the left main tower speaker. Also, the main speakers are mirror imaged line stage in design so these can be placed near the wall with little or not loss in performance.

Additionally, there are 4 windows on one of the long walls though they will have block out curtains. I really would not want to have the side surround in front of the curtain if it is possible much less a subwoofer next to it.

Also, I have spent quite a bit of money on the cabling to keep all of the components together for the ICs which are more expensive than the speaker cables.

I have now had another conversation with Chad of Epik and there is no problem placing the Conquests on their side on top of the Subtraps that have been built to match their vertical orientation floor plan dimensions.

By placing the large Main Towers along the long axis wall opposite the windows and curtains I am also able to place the Projection screen at an optimum position as well as the speakers along with the large center channel speaker and even move the 2 Epik Conquest speakers between the main towers and also place the subs on their side. The smaller rear channel speakers (7.1) will now be against the curtains instead of a side surround and subwoofer.

Rich

How would this compare to a processor that has built in room equalization like my Integra 9.8? Also, how would one set it up if you were using Audyssey room correction?
