not true at all for one ALL movies must still work on a 1.0 player ya you mite not get PIP or the 2.0 crap but you will still get the movie you follow me? PS3 can be updated to 2.0 one of the many things that make it a real good deal thing is HD-DVD fans will never get over that they cant get uncompressed sound |

Anyway... there will be no need to buy another player for BD, just some players won't be able to access 1.1 or 2.0 features. But they will always play the movie at the very least! Now... try getting a TL51 disc (if it ever appears) to work at all on your current HD-DVD player. If nothing else it will be good for a chuckle. |

How soon everyone forgets. It was just over a month ago that Denon said all players might not work with the new profiles. I thought they were talking smack since they did not have a player on the market and needed to give people a reason to wait. Until this is proved it is no big deal and means nothing. Same as with what Denon said it means nothing until it is proved.
However if either one is proved true it is the death of the format. For those that did not see what was said here you go. http://www.listenup.com/content/part...dge.aug.07.php |

"In other news for the HD-DVD camp, just two days after Sony DADC announced that they'd replicated their milestone 10 millionth 50GB Blu-ray Disc, the HD-DVD Promotions Group quickly countered with a little damage control, making sure everyone knew that the DVD Forum was close to approving the spec for a triple-layer 51GB HD-DVD disc. However, industry sources are telling us that NONE of the existing Toshiba HD-DVD players and drives are currently capable of reading them. Indeed, the Video Business story indicates that once the spec is finalized, "compatibility with current HD DVD player and recorders can be investigated." According to reports from Bits readers who were on at CEATAC this weekend, Toshiba reps told attendees that the triple-layer disc configuration would require a hardware change (the lens on existing drives reportedly isn't capable of moving to focus on the third layer), meaning that the existing drives are not firmware updatable. This of course is unofficial. It remains to be seen what testing of the discs will reveal."
also: "Also today (and this would go in the Rumor Mill category so salt it accordingly), a number of readers have e-mailed us to say they're hearing that Canadian electronics retailer Future Shop may be dropping HD-DVD. The retailer has reportedly liquidated its stock of Toshiba HD-DVD hardware and their online site no longer lists stand-alone HD-DVD hardware (only Blu-ray and Combo players remain). What's more, employees from multiple Future Shop locations have apparently told Bits readers that the chain is no longer stocking HD-DVD due to lack of interest from their customers. We'll have to see if there's anything to this. It COULD simply be due to a change-over in Toshiba's player models (the new models for late 2007-2008 aren't in stores yet). Thanks to Bits reader Dan C. (among others) for the info." He also talked about the latest hd-dvd/Spielberg fiasco buts that's old news. http://digitalbits.com/#mytwocents Last edited by radagast; 10-10-2007 at 12:59 PM. |

Hey,
I had a feeling from the start the TL51 was a publicity stunt. Movies are never going to exist on that format. If anything maybe they will try to promote it for computers data storage. Anyway,.. I do wish things were more finalized on the Blu side though I guess I can't complain as all the changes are just to make it better. -Brian |

BR is supposed to be next gen, the fact that it has such huge potential still that keeps it open-ended is a technical wonder. If it was a closed case already it would be HD-DUD. It's nothing more than an intermediate technology at best. Nothing next gen about it. As you can see Capacity is showing its ugly head already! And Blu is ready! |

Basically it was incompatible with older/cheaper DVD players. So it's not like this hasn't happened before although I think the difference is big because the cost of these highdef players initially were huge. I remember paying $600for a second generation DVD player (top of the line back then) and it seems to be a drop in the bucket with the top of the line players for highdef right now. |
