Default It only does - 3D

They announced the Blu-ray 3D specs today...

3D Blu-Ray Specs Finalized, But What About Your Gear?

If you have a PS3 you won't need a new player... just a new TV and some glasses. I'm impressed that the new discs will play in both 2D and 3D depending on your set-up. It'd suck to have to check before buying.

The article doesn't say, but any idea if they're moving to 100-Gig discs? It says 3D movies take twice the space, so I assume 50 won't be big enough for longer movies.

Did not read the article but just a bit of facts

1) yes it is backwards compatible with 2D but not sure if older players might need a FW
2) it is still only rumoured that the PS3 will do 3D, one of the issues (if it is real 3D) is that HDMI 1.3 or Composite or component where not build for dual video streaming
3)there is almost no chance that BD-100 will ever be used for movies
4) no it is not 2x the space (or BW). It does not have 2 complete streams it is only the difference between the two that is encoded for the second stream

Surprised this hasn't come up more in this forum. According to all the stories I've read, the Blu-ray 3D specifications were designed so that the PS3 could handle it. HDMI 1.3 might not have formats laid out for 3D, but it has enough bandwidth for 120 Hz at 1080p.

Also, the 3D video only takes 50% more space on disc, doubling the space would be a 100% increase.

3D would be really cool to have, but because I have to buy a new tv. It dosen't matter to me for about another 10 years...

So will the next move will be for the HDTV vendors to battle for mindshare on the best 3D display/glasses approach, or have most them aligned with active technology?

Its not a rumor that the PS3 will support 3D, its been confirmed that it will.

My guess is the processing power of the cell makes this possible and the only player that doesn't need the new HDMI 1.4 spec to do it.

Expect PS3 fans to be on high speed when watching a 3D movie though, haha.

It's more like power of the PS3 to save the Blu-ray format that's made this possible. HDMI 1.4 doesn't add any bandwidth for video over 1.3, the only thing 1.3 is missing is a way to tell the TV that the video it is sending is supposed to be in 3D. With the PS3, users might have to push a "3D" button on their TV remote. And if the TV is using the shutter-glasses method (which is what it sounds like Sony is doing), then even that's not important. Just put on the glasses when the picture goes funny.

There's also the matter of telling the TV which frame is for which eye, but there's plenty of ways of doing that within the HDMI 1.3 spec.

It looks like Nvidia will be supporting Blu-ray 3D also, and apparently without requiring new cards with HDMI 1.4; most likely a side-effect of the PS3 support.

I still can't wrap my head around a person or a family sitting in front of the tv with 3d glasses on all the time. Kinda takes home entertainment a little too far (everyday use, the occasional 3d movie is different.) I wouldn't be surprised if theres some people going way over the top and putting 3d contact lenses in their eyes or something. Lets hope people still go outside in 10 years.

unless, there is an official PR or a working FW made public then yes it is a rumour. And unless you know how it works, it is also pretty useless when the discussion is about needing a new player or not. The output needed to display 3D for one display might not be the output needed for a different display.

The Blu-ray 3D specification is also designed to allow PS3 game consoles to play back Blu-ray 3D content in 3D

It's hard to imagine Sony allowing this to be included in the PR if they didn't actually intend to actually implement the spec on existing PS3s.

Uh-oh, I think 3-D bricked my ps3.

Disclaimer: Gee, is it still 2009; thought it was 2011. How time flies.

Remember now, I called it first.
