Well I am extremely satisfied with my new Onkyo RC-160 but there are some issues that are about 2 issues that I have with it that the Manuel/Google isn't telling me.
1. How do I activate the receivers upscaler. Even though I know it isn't the best I would like to know how to activate it so then I know how to do it. The guy at the store made this a reason to get this one over the SR-507 so it would be nice to know how to. 2. How do I receive 5.1 audio from my OTA antenna (which I have hooked up directly to the TV). I try using the Optical out from my TV to my Onkyo but no luck because its showing a stereo broadcast even when it is clearly a 5.1 one |

typically with receivers scaling it happens if you have something coming in via rca cables or s-video or component or co-ax and then it goes out to the TV via HDMI, when it sends the signal out via HDMI the receiver should automatically upscale the picture. You don't need to 'activate' it. Also, video feeds that are coming in via HDMI will typically go out via HDMI with NO scaling at all... this is pretty standard for all receivers in the mid-level market and down. There are a few hi-end receivers that do HDMI to HDMI scaling I believe.
I believe the audio will have to go directly into your receiver not the TV in order to do that, but I could be wrong... Otherwise you may have to go into the TV's menu to make sure that it is outputting 5.1 through your optical........ BUT perhaps someone else can help you with that..... |

i would have thought this was an automatic feature. i don't have to tell my 805 to do anything. it is preset as to what it will upgrade signals to. i'm surprised if yours doesn't do that as well. i see that your receiver does 1080i upscaling, analog to hdmi upscaling but not component video upscaling. http://www.onkyousa.com/model.cfm?m=...s=Receiver&p=f
i believe it should be upconverting everything up to 1080i (except component) and straight through for 1080p. while i haven't read the manual, i don't think you need to do anything. why are you not using HDMI for your dish network or don't you have the HD box? you have 5 HDMI inputs. something is not set up correctly or enabled. check your manual again. but i still thing the upscaling should occur automatically. keep us posted and best of luck |
