Default Optimizing Your PS3 for Blu-ray

Pretty good article and video for novices (and/or those who are not sure what are good settings):

There were a couple settings in that article that were different then what I had so changed them. When I get a chance I'll see if I notice anything different.

One note: "Limited" outputs for displays calibrated to 16-235 video levels.

"Full" outputs for displays calibrated to 0-255 computer levels.

Cool. I actually think I'll set my Dynamic Range Control to "on" because the dialogue in movies is too low compared to the sound effects.

Note: the DRC setting only applies to Dolby codecs. DTS and Uncompressed PCM will still have the wide range dynamics.

Interstingky enough, I've fumbled through using trial and error and all of my settings are the same as the recommended. It's good to know that I appear to be doing something right for once with my settings!

NOTE: for the PS3 slim, and assuming u have an HD capable AVR, our site recommends "bitstream" for BD/DVD Audio Output Format (HDMI): https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=40872.

I don't think you can really say "this site" officially recommends bitstream over PCM. The "bitstream vs. PCM" argument is hardly settled. Many will argue you can't tell the difference between PS3 and AVR decoding when it comes to perceived audio output.

You're right. Perhaps poor choice of words.

I guess if u want the little blue lights to light up on ur AVR, then select bitstream. Otherwise, PCM would be equally acceptable.

I understood what you were getting at. I recently replaced an old PS3 with a new Slim. Guess which option I chose.

I read that the down side of opting for bitstream is that you don't get the "secondary" audio, like the menu noises and picture in picture video commentary. Well, I never use PIP commentary and I have yet to notice any missing audio in movie menus. I go with bitstream not because I believe it improves the audio, but for the vanity of seeing the HD audio codec indicators light up.

Correct. I wrote much of the language you cited (note the credit on post 2 of that thread); bitstream over LPCM for "slim" PS3's isn't even MY recommendation, let alone that of this site. (I actually have a "fat" PS3; bitstreaming isn't even an option for me. I was updating the original post to note that bitstreaming IS an option for "slim" PS3's.)

Strictly speaking, it shouldn't matter whether you decode lossless audio in the player or AVR; both produce the same result--uncompressed, bit-for-bit LPCM, 100% identical to the studio master. (As someone else suggested, it's like arguing PKZIP mangles files while WinZip doesn't, or vice versa; if any Zip utility changes files while unzipping, it's not really a Zip utility. Lossless codecs like TrueHD & DTS-HD MA are simply Zip files for LPCM.) However, there are several issues that should be considered when making a decision:
  1. To hear secondary audio (PIP, commentary, BD-Live, etc.) alongside HD primary audio, you MUST decode both in the player as this requires mixing two audio signals at LPCM level. (PS3's are among the best at this; they're one of the few players that will mix secondary audio with HD primary audio. Most stand-alones must reduce primary audio to DD/DTS to mix in secondary audio.)
  2. OTOH, the PS3's decoder does NOT implement some metadata-based adjustments, most notably dialnorm on TrueHD tracks (it's not used with DTS-HD MA). Many don't think this is necessary; but if it is to you, you must bitstream.
  3. Of course, to bitstream HD audio you MUST have TrueHD & DTS-HD MA decoders in your AVR. (Mine doesn't, but then I bought it specifically to go with my PS3 which doesn't bitstream.) And, of course, you won't get Dolby or DTS lights on your AVR unless you bitstream; but the Display button on your PS3 Bluetooth remote will tell you what it's decoding.
  4. Some AVRs offer different field options for multichannel LPCM (i.e., decoded in player) than for HD-audio bitstreams. This is particularly important if you have a 7.1 AVR and want Dolby Prologic IIx processing to fill in the other two channels (most movie soundtracks are currently limited to 5.1 audio). If you have a "slim" PS3, this would be the most likely reason to choose bitstreaming over LPCM.
  5. Some people believe HDMI jitter can interfere with multichannel LPCM, but not bitstreams. However, that shouldn't be an issue unless you have a very long HDMI cable (i.e., 50 feet) from your PS3 to your AVR.
  6. Finally, this isn't an issue with PS3's (all of them can decode), but many stand-alone BD players can't decode TrueHD or DTS-HD MA, but can bitstream them; if so, bitstreaming is your only option.

LOL...I do it for the exact same reason! In fact, my vanity cost me $299 (I upgraded from a perfectly fine 80 GB "phatty" to the "slim" just to finally see those little blue lights on my Denon). My kids -- who got the "old" PS3 in their room now as a result -- tell me they love me more tho.

And RBB, thx for the clarification. U r indeed "da man."
