looks like a lot of members haven't been paying attention to the rumblings in the industry lately. Basically the entire film industry is getting ready to push 3D big time... for live-action theatrical films as well as the usual 3D CGI cartoon. Avatar is just the beginning. The manufacturers and the studios have coordinated their efforts waiting for the technology to mature. The BDA getting the spec finalized for Blu-ray sealed the deal, and was aptly timed. ESPN will have full time 3D HD sports and Discovery will also have full time 3D channels. The world cup is slated for 1080p 3D as is the superbowl. Folks, 3D is here. It's good.

The future is 3D. Anyone who saw Avatar in Real 3D understands how adding depth and dimension to a film can really enhance the you-are-there experience. This isn't your dad's 3D.

There spec basically gives you two 1080p pictures... one for the left eye and one for the right.

How your 3D TV or projector actually displays that is totally up to the product design. You can do polarized light, you can do alternating left/right eye with LCD shutter, or maybe something new yet to be invented. Whether you get headaches depends on which method you use to deliver the 3D to your eyes and how you react to it. No different than choosing between DLP or LCOS or LCD or Plasma... pros and cons to every method of delivering a picture.

yeah but would you really want to watch EVERYTHING in 3D. There has to be an option for 2D releases as well don't you agree?
or a lot of people can't watch tv or movies anymore. nobody can sit with these glasses on for EVERY single movie or tv show or sport you eye sight will go bad and you will get a splitting headache if you have to see everything in 3D.

I think people are getting excited about at home 3D and are starting to get a little carried away. Of course they aren't just going to only broadcast things in 3D, not for a very long while at least.

Just like most cable companies offer HD and SD versions of the same channel, there will most likely be a 3D and 2D version of the channels that offer 3D versions of their programming. Film studios and cable companies like money, they aren't just going to stop showing 2D all together, they would lose loads of cash.

All 3D Blu-rays will be backward compatible and will play in 2D in all of your current Blu-Ray setup.

Why do you feel this way? Do you get a splitting headache from looking at the real world? The real world is displayed to us in 3D. Should we be getting a splitting headache from that? This reasoning of yours reminds me of when our parents used to tell us not to sit to close to the TV. It doesn't do ANYTHING to your eyes or head.

Now, I will say that a lower frame rate is more likely to give your eyes trouble or possibly headaches. When I ran my old CRT computer monitors at 60 Hz, my eyes would get bloodshot during length videos. That was due to the refresh rate. 240 Hz or even 120 Hz is much higher than that. You shouldn't have anything to worry about.

Are we going to be able to upgrade our PS3 firmwares to 3D and then just put on glasses and be set? Or do we need different TV's?

I believe we will need new TV' for the next level of 3D.

My only hope for 3D is that it takes off but they give the option of a 2D version as not everyone can watch a 3D film.

Glad to see I'm not the only one. Of course, if/when it goes mainstream (and I mean, almost everything being released in 3D), then we can talk.

Every 3D display, and all 3D programs, will be fully viewable in standard 2D mode.

There is no problem.

But will they still release the movies in 2D as well?
If that is the case i will have no problem with 3D whatsoever. because i still think 3D should be an event and for special movies only that require 3D like Avatar

Golly Gee. Have you been reading anything about the new 3D spec? All 3D devices, including the 3D blu-ray Discs themselves, area fully backwards compatible with 2D. You can buy a 3D Blu-ray Disc of Avatar, put it in your currrent 2D Blu-ray player, and watch the standard 2D image. No problem at all!

Have you been reading anything anyone is saying?
A 3D picture is TWO 2D PICTURES. Thus, every 3d blu-ray IS a 2d blu-ray (if you only display one eye)

Well like everything else: if it was originally released in 3-D then I can justify watching it in 3-D. If it wasn't originally released in 3-D then I don't want it in 3-D. Just like black and white vs. colour.

Surely you can't be serious. There's a BIG difference between how the brain interprets the real world and how it interprets two overlayed 1080p television pictures! A big difference!

I have a 52-inch 1080p/120hz Sharp Aquos. If I have to get a new TV then I will miss the 3-D boat (even if the PS3 is in fact going to be able to play 3-D BDs). If a TV upgrade is NOT required, I will jump right on it.

I love how Avatar is being used to push this forward. I didn't think Avatar was that great a movie!

BTW it looks like 3-D tellies will be 50 inch and above. At least from Panasonic.
