exactly.

on a serious note, one reason the fronts arent getting 'much action' is the fact that most of the detail is anchored in the center channel, thus my previous indication of how you can maximize the experience by simply using the two as a stereo setting. again, its a matter of preference, and some people can get by doing so. 5.1 is also my deferred preference, but i wouldnt find myself enjoying it so much if my speakers arent 'blending' in properly.

alot of sony (and other brands) Htib are made with already exisiting, sold seperately receivers (including that one you listed.) Usually if the receiver is real thin or has a built in dvd player or something it is made for a box set for day one.
