I recently purchased a PS3 and a Sony HTIB: HT-DDW790
I wasn't familiar with the new audio formats until I watched my first blu ray disk. ( I always thought DTS was "it") Now, I'm planning to get an Onkyo TX-SR605. So, would my htib speakers work on it? I got that sony for about $160, and the cheapest speakers at Circuit City is about $200. |

I looked up the specs at cnet and this is what I got:
Sony HTIB: 135 Watt - THD 10 % - 1 channel(s) ( Subwoofer), 135 Watt - 6 Ohm - 5 channel(s) ( Surround) Onkyo: 90 Watt - 8 Ohm - THD 0.08 % - 2 channel(s) ( Front), 90 Watt - 8 Ohm - THD 0.08 % - 1 channel(s) ( Center), 90 Watt - 8 Ohm - THD 0.08 % - 2 channel(s) ( Surround), 90 Watt - 8 Ohm - THD 0.08 % - 2 channel(s) ( Surround back) My HTIB speakers are only at 6 Ohms, would that mean it will get fried when I hook it up to the Onkyo? |

Yes, you should have zero issues with those speakers and a Onkyo receiver. While they are 6ohms instead of 8, this will make very little difference because this particular receiver puts out a ton more juice than the Sony receiver ever did.
Reading the specs, the Sony has 10% distortion at 135 watts with only one speaker playing... The Onkyo has .08% distortion - which is over 100 times less than the Sony - while driving TWO speakers at 90 watts. This receiver is far more robust and will deliver far better performance when hooked up. I personally did the opposite. I hooked up my Definitive Technology BP30 speakers to a cheap Kenwood HTIB receiver, and the speakers were so much better I questioned for a brief moment whether I should upgrade my receiver... fortunately, that moment passed. |

I did a little more research and found this:
http://www.onkyousa.com/model.cfm?m=...class=Receiver Here's an excerpt: Amplifier Section Power Output Front L/R 90 W + 90 W (8 ohms, 20 Hz–20 kHz, 0.08%, 2 channels driven, FTC) 105 W + 105 W (8 ohms, 1 kHz, 0.7%, 2 channels driven, FTC) 110 W + 110 W (6 ohms, 1 kHz, 0.1%, 2 channels driven, FTC) also saw this: http://www.gspr.com/onkyo/images/txsr605_rear_300.jpg says on the back: "CAUTION: SPEAKER IMPEDANCE 6ohms - 16 ohms" Does this mean that the output is adjustable? (any 605 owners out there confirm?) |
