Default Need Help choosing speakers to match an Onkyo 705 receiver

My previous helped me decide the receiver now I need the communities knowledge in picking a speaker for the receiver.

My Choices are
http://www.us.onkyo.com/model.cfm?m=...ss=Speaker&p=i

and

http://www.us.onkyo.com/model.cfm?m=...ss=Speaker&p=i

If anyone has other recommendations please post the name and why it would be a better set. Thanks for any help.

Unless you're a true audiophile with some great ears, both seem like good choices... Onkyo is really known more for their top-notch receivers and other a/v hardware, not really their speakers. while they are not bad speakers, as you can see I have a cheaper version of an Onkyo HTIB, I would look at other options. Let me know what you're budget looks like as there are a lot better options for speakers out there...

Judging by your excellent choice in receiver, i'm gonna guess you're looking for some great sound- if you are look no further than Definitive Technology Speakers. I've had a subscription to Home Theatre magazine for years and everytime they review a Def Tech product, they crap all over themselves. they consistently say that for the price, they simply cannot be beat. if that doesn't convince you, well, my dad has a sweet Def Tech setup that I never get tired of hearing. He has a Denon 2808 receiver powering 2 Studio Monitor 350's for the fronts, 2 BP1.2x Bipolar surrounds, a SuperCube 2 for subwoofer, and a CLR 2300 for his center channel. i recently suggested a similar setup for a buddy of mine building a home theatre in his living room and chose the same setup, substituting a downgrade in center channel and subwoofer, but still Def Tech, and he absolutely loves it!!!!!!! It sounds fantastic!!!! You will not be disapointed with these speakers

Can you give me an estimate on the cost of the speakers combined?

If you buy them as a set you're usually gonna get a better deal, but it still sounds like it's gonna be more spendy than you're looking for. I just called my dad and this is what he paid for his setup 2 years ago:
fronts: pair $500 center: 650 surrounds: pair $300 sub: $1200

Crazy right? Well not if you hear it, worth every penny. A hypocrit I know I am cause I couldn't even afford the receiver you bought, but trust me...
Def Tech also makes a HTIB that ranges from about $600-$1000. Still gonna be great sound- here's the link to this system.

You have an excellent receiver. Go with a speaker package for now and upgrade on your speakers as time and $$$ allows.

Default Onkyo match

I cant say that a particular brand of speakers matches best with the Onkyo, but I do carry Integra, who is Onkyos High End line and we match everyone from James loudspeakers to Niles and Speakercraft. When it comes down to it, I would say you need to go listen to some brands your self. You may be a New England style fan like Polk, Boston Accoustics, Sapphire to and extent, or Snell. Anyways, If Onkyo sounds anything like a Integra and it should in terms of tonal quality, you should be happy with any of those brands, plus really sensitive speakers like Klipsh. I personally am not a fan of Omni -polar speakers so I would not recommend brands like Def Tec, Mirage or Bose, but with that said you make like the softer audio. We are all different.

Yes, but remember two things....
Match speakers to your taste, they are different
and speakers are forever, you will change the other
components many times before you change a good
set of speakers

Are you planning on upgrading speakers in the future??? if so, I'd spend $400 on a pair of speakers for the front, and add more later. Seems like you spent a decent amount on the receiver, but are trying to cut corners now.... If you can find speakers that sound good "TO YOU" for $100 by all means, get them.... but if you find other speakers to listen to, you'll quickly find that your budget will never match your "wish list"

There's about 50 "notches" above the Onkyo stuff, but I'll agree that they make a pretty good, and affordable receiver.

Beta man is right......buy two speakers for the $400 budget you have now from a quality speaker manufacturer and add the center, rears and sub as money allows......you will be much happier in the end.

i just picked up the quintet II's and the ksw-10, my room is not huge about 15x15 give or take a little more or less. I don't have them hooked up yet but everything I read leads to some good sounding speakers. I will get them hooked up next weekend, I am also getting the Onkyo 705 on monday! I got the speakers plus the sub for 399 at vanns.com... free shipping

When picking speakers one should really determine what is your main priority, the sound quality of movies(think dvd or BD) or the sound quality of music(think cds or vinyl). Rarely under $2000 do you find speakers that excel at both.
