I've said it before in some other thread, but I'll repost it here:
Up would've been great as a Pixar Short, but as an 80 minute movie I'd rank it among Pixar's worst (which isn't much of an insult, I guess). I think it has a chance to get nominated because of the 10 spots, and a somewhat weak year for movies. But the big difference between Up and Avatar, is that the latter would be nominated even if there were only 5 spots, so the "If the blue alien cats can be nominated, why can't Up" is the weakest of the arguments provided. You don't ignore a movie that makes almost $2 billion in barely a month and a half. Here's some Academy Award ratings: 1996: 44.81 million viewers 1997: 40.83 million viewers 1998: 57.25 million viewers 1999: 45.63 million viewers 2000: 46.53 million viewers Here's a fun game: Guess which year had Titanic? Two years ago, the Oscars had 31.76 million viewers. They need a boost. |
