Does UP deserve an Oscar Nomination for BEST FILM?

And the Blue alien argument is just point that, if you can nominate a film with Blue aliens in, what so wrong with nominating an animated film. I do see where you come from though.

How did Hugh Jackman do last year? It seemed like the Oscars got their flow back, the acceptance speeches weren't long, and they rapid-fired though most of the awards.

The whole thing wasn't very long as opposed to the good ol' days when they had to throw the music up on rambling acceptance speeches that included their hairsylists etc.

In a way, I compare it a bit to The Fountain. That film was almost unbearably sad but I still thought the movie was uplifting as a whole because of what I personally deem to be Tommy's realization and acceptance at the end.

I cant agree with Logan. The message is overwhelmingly positive for the vast majority of the film. A cranky old man learning to accept change and to embrace a new adventure. How is that depressing? It's exciting.

An old man comes to realize that other people, even YOUNG ones, have had a rough life experience too. He chooses to help this unfortunate child. And the kid is Happy-Peppy-And-Bursting-With-Joy and has an overwhelmingly glass-half-full attitude. How is that depressing?

I thought the opening montage was horrifically sad (in a good way) and set the stage perfectly for a hugely uplifting (no pun intended) story.

The only depressing part for me was when it ended.

Oh, that's not a dig on the shorts at all. They're usually really good too. I just thought Up would've worked great as a ~10 minute movie. The 3-4 minute "married life" montage was great. Add another 3-4 minutes of him flying in his balloon house to the waterfall, and you have a great little short movie.

He bumped it up to just under 37 million, but I was trying to prove a point with some selective numbers.

But I guess 37 million is still not great, considering it's a full 35% lower than Titanic's year.

I think Up is an Uplifitng movie overall. It starts of depressing, but as the story progresses, Carl realizes that there is still something to live for rather than just go to some exotic locale just to await death. I think seeing him rejuvinated at the end is definatly uplifting.

As sentimental and predictable as the ending was, I absolutely love the last scene and always get a big smile on my face.

I found the two "hurt" characters forming a strong bond to override your spoiler. Yes, they each had scars, but their new partnership moved them past their wounds. IMO

there's not many animated films made that can make a grown man want to cry not once but 3 times

this is a great movie, one of the best animated/Pixar/Disney/etc films ever made and absolutely deserves a nomination!

I believe that some would argue that point.

After being screened at Cannes, the Best Picture award rumors started churning hard and heavy for Up. They went on for months. I dont think we should discount the possibility/probability that Up may have been one of the nominees even if there were only five. It was all we heard about for a while.

I dont see much of a similarity to Up in that painting. Looks like a reach to me. It doesnt depict a story, just a theme. The theme of life. Where is Russel, Dug and Muntz? 90% of the movie takes place AFTER what that painting depicts in its fourth cell.

I personally wouldnt compare a movie where the main focus is story, to a movie where the main focus is the technology employed to make and exhibit it.

Haha, it was a joke, so don't worry about it.

Although there is a bit of a point somewhere in there. Up's story is as original as Avatar, which can be interpreted either way. Basic themes and ideas, with details filling in all the rest.

I most certainly would. In the Blu-ray Academy Awards thread I have it as one of the five nominees. I personally think that Up is the greatest thing that Pixar has done, I've enjoyed it more than their other projects. I would have to disagree with the film being sad and depressing because on the whole I found it to be very uplifting, as others have stated here.

There isn't any doubt in my mind that it will be one of the ten nominees we'll hear on February 2nd.

Edit...... this one gets better every time I watch it, but Monster's Inc. is holding firm at the #1 spot for me in regards to Pixar movies

I don't get it, because if the joke is that he can't tell the color... dogs aren't colorblind. The first car to drive by after Doug says "grey one" is a yellow car, which (as seen in the image below) is a color dogs see best:

Agree with you Beta. The film is not for young kids. I had a hard time answering the questions my son was asking. He liked the movie, and has watched it a couple of times. Nothing like Ratatouille or Kung Fu Panda though. Up is animation for adults that was marketed for kids. A wonderful film...no doubt.
