Quote:
Have you ever been watching the Oscars, clapped for someone who just won an Award and then been bored by their overly long and drawn out acceptance speech where they thank everyone from the director and cast to their pet gold fish? Well, those days may very well be behind you with this latest change to the Academy Awards.

Reuters is reporting that all nominees were asked by Academy Awards producers – Adam Shankman and Bill Mechanic – to prepare two speeches to give if they should win: one speech for when they receive their award on stage, explaining to the audience what winning an Oscar means to them, and a second speech where winners can thank any and everyone they want in front of a special “Thank You cam” backstage.

Suddenly sitting through the Oscars sounds a lot more appealing, no?…

Contenders for the top honors – including George Clooney, Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges – gathered on Monday for the annual Oscar Nominees luncheon in Beverly Hills and in traditional style they were given tips on what their acceptance speech should be like. Mechanic called long thank you-filled speeches, “the single most-hated thing on the show.”

I’d make a case for those annoying montages, but I digress…

The backstage thank you videos will be posted on the Internet and the winners will be able to do what they like with them, from showing friends and family to posting them on their Facebook pages. This isn’t a mandatory thing but rather a strong suggestion (read: if most people follow instructions but a couple don’t, then the latter are going to stick out), and to persuade the nominees, they were shown past acceptance speeches from people like Renee Zellwegger, who gave the type of speech the producers are looking for.

This isn’t the first change the Academy has made to the proceedings this year: First there was the expansion of the Best Picture category from five to ten nominees, and more recently came the news that the Oscar statuettes will have the winners’ names engraved at the Governors Ball immediately following the ceremony, as opposed to having the engravings done weeks later. 197 nameplates (to factor in all winners) – featuring the name, category, film title and the year – will be made in advance and then put onto the statuettes immediately after the awards show.

Needless to say, the Academy is going all-out to try and jazz things up and bring in more viewers for this year’s awards ceremony. The fact that ten movies are nominated for Best Picture as opposed to the usual five means that more audience-friendly (read: popular) movies were nominated (like The Blind Side and Up) that arguably may not have been included on the list if it were only five.

Are you someone who gets sick of acceptance speeches that go on and on with a million thank yous? What do you make of the strong possibility that we won’t be seeing much of that anymore in the winners’ stage speeches? Will you go out of your way to watch the “thank you speech” online?

Read about that....not sure how I feel. An Oscar speech is an Oscar speech...I do think this decision will make the speeches more interesting but the winners should be allowed to say whatever they want (within reason of course ). The Academy really is doing as much as they can to make the award show more "interesting" this year

Thumbs down

Winning an award and not being allowed to thank those who helped you achieve it?

LAME!

Time limit? Sure.

Dictating content? Bad.

James Cameron rooting for Kathryn Bigelow to win best director Oscar:

Quote:
Cameron has been promoting his Oscar candidacy this week in New York, but he said he’s also pulling for the success of his ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow, who is nominated for best director for “The Hurt Locker.” She could become the first woman to win in the category–but she’d have to beat Cameron. “Honestly, it blunts my desire to go after it quite so aggressively, because I’d love to see her feted and anointed as the first female director [to win an Oscar],” says Cameron.

I wonder how many will follow this attempted new protocol. I'm with the writer; kill the cheesy montages, the musical production numbers for the nominated songs, & let the "main" categories winners' talk for 1-2 minutes at most, vice the usual requested :45 second length. Use Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, Supp. Actor & Actress -- that's just 6 times where they'd maybe go over :45 seconds. Which means what, 6-12 minutes total? Play everyone else off at the 45-second limit, kill the montages, the musical numbers, & the show ends on time 90% of the time.

I'd say he was "also" rooting for her to win, without trying to come off as egotistical about rooting for himself. I'm sure he'll be fine if she wins, as long as his movie wins Best Picture. That's what I believe is the case anyway. If he wins Best Director, fine. But he's prob. Hoping more for the movie to win Best Picture; to help recognize the hundreds of people who worked for many years on it. (it'll obviously win some/most of the technical awards anyway).

no, they're just talking about having them all try to limit their speeches to the time limit (:45 seconds I believe), then if they have anyone they forgot or want to add to a Longer speech, they can do so backstage into a camera, which will be posted on the Web, and/or their own Website, or Facebook page, etc.

AH ok! thanks for the clarification. Was reading the news clip but could not figure out what they mean. I understand the need to try to keep the show under a certain time. That being said I always felt so bad when there was a group winning an Oscar and they would pass the mic around and then the ochestra would start playing and cue to commercial. I felt bad for them. I can understand cutting the directors and actors, they are always in the limelight but for the crews and others that no one ever see and that work ultra long hours, I think they should be able to thank mom and dad in peace.

Shouldn't take more than 45 seconds to thank Mom and Dad, I think.

But a lot of time they win the award in group of 5 or more. A lot of them don't even get their chances. I don't know but I just think they help make the movies just as much as the directors or the actors but they never get any respect and never make the same amount of money as well. I just think they should have their 2 minutes each on TV and let their family be happy.

I think after they win once they stop doing that and we've gotten some great speeches in the past, Tom Hanks, Daniel Day Lewis, Forest Whitaker. Pick deserving winners.

Besides that, this is just some lame excuse for the Academy to hear how great they are. "Oh tell us how much our awards means to you?" It's the highest honor in Film but it's also one of the most ridiculous run awards too.
