Another way to buy the Oppo.

This is the player to own for professional athletes and others that can't figure out what to do with the big money.

For the sale of discussion let's assume the Elites are $6k and the closest competition is $3k. So for 2x the price, one can get a product that is much better than the competition.

With regards to the members of this forum, the consensus would probably be that the best bd player is either the Oppo or the PS3 based on price and performance. Let's say $500 is the price. The Krell is 30x that price! At 30x the price, is that Krell much much better than the Oppo? I seriously doubt it.

I dunno about you but I think that many people here would buy a $1000 bd player (2x the Oppo) if it had the same difference between the Pio Elites and other brands. That's how I would justify the Pio Elite or any gear I would buy.

That said, I doubt if there is any member here that will be buy the Krell. Clearly that is for a different demographic and for most if not all members here it will be a waste of money. Just my opinion of course.
For 6K I can buy a very nice PJ .... Oh My Sony KDS a-3000 Bravia was 1800 and the PQ is as good as the Pioneer Plasma...It just seems like people bash products they cant afford .. I cant afford one, but its a good read

No its not bashing what you can't afford. Its not over paying for something that does NOT need to be over paid for. Its about the arrogance of a company like Krell putting out a product that costs 2 cents to make and getting suckers to buy it. There is nothing wrong with pointing this out. I will put my 300 dollar PS3 up against this stupid 15,000 dollar Krell ANY DAY OF THE WEEK! Suckers will buy this period. JC

You could buy 750 blu-ray movies at $20 a pop for the price of this player, so realistically you could probably pick up a 1000 or more blu-ray discs. I think I know what I would rather have.

Krell normally sells to an entirely different demographic than most members of this community. They usually make often heavy, very well made but limited numbers of their products (they may be the largest High End Equipment maker in the US). This is not Sony or Panasonic. Usually they also sound quite good. But, for many their pricing may seem outlandish. I will be interested at the very least in reading the reviews and possibly have an opportunity to hear one of these units.

At one time I owned one of the Krell KAV-250 cd/2 CD players. It was built like a tank and well made but I have long ago sold the unit and now have had several players, most of which have been upgraded machines that sound far better.

I still own 1 piece of Krell gear which is my upgraded Krell KAV-250a/3 Power amp. I now will use this for my rear channel speakers.

Upgraded or modified Krell equipment can sound better than stock, but, it is an expensive option for getting better performance.

Imo it's just priced to be a status symbol, nothing else. They don't try compete with the Sony/Panasonics/Oppos et al., it has a price that will grant the owner some exclusivity and maybe match his other gear.

Strangely i feel very differently about high end digital gear than i feel about analog high end. I had no problem buying a Forsell turntable for my vinyl and to this day don't think it was a bad investment. But the highly integrated digital gear, i just don't see the value at the high end any more (started with high end CD gear).

Agreed. Their MKII player was a complete and utter disaster. I don't know anyone with that player that did not have the drive eventually fail. Many dealers stopped taking it as a trade in, it got that bad. It's more or less an expensive paper weight.

I look at Krell as the Harley Davidson of the industry. Their name & legacy precedes them, but they have been surpassed in terms of high performance.

Now, regarding this blu-ray player, I don't see the point simply because the person buying a $15K player will have a top of the line prepro already, rendering this unit pointless. Who buys a top of the line prepro and then decides to bypass it in favor for the DACs in their source? This isn't hifi. We're watching movies.

But it took what 5 years for someone to come out with all the features in a Blu player for 500 dollars as the First gen PS3 ...(Analog outs on the Oppo are no big deal for me wheres the WI-FI in the Oppo)... There is no comparison to Pioneer plasma charging for what they made...will you see a huge difference in PQ between an LG 60" and the Kuro 141FD? yes, in my opinion you will. Will you see a difference in blu-ray PQ between the OPPO (or any other blu-ray player for that matter) and the Krell? Don't think so...

Halcro,

Please keep your opinions to yourself because you may anger the Krell guys on this site.....and they may start to snap at you

...it's obvious your electronics are of MUCH higher fidelity than your speakers. In my experience your speakers should be worth at least more than your cd player.....or are you still " building ".

how can you say Krell is overpriced when you own a meridian...a company that makes a 20,000 dollar cd player - and that's not overpriced?? Please explain...

Everyone else has their opnions , Thats why all the Krell bashing and also the Lexicon bashing ...But Im shure the 20K Meridian sounds better than the 15K Krell

I never said you owned the 20k Meridian....but the one you own is a little overpriced as well for 5k. Although I bet you got a good deal from your boss on it!

The Krell bashing and Lexicon bashing are totally seperate issues. Lexicon is 3 rungs down on the ladder from Krell, and I don't think the Krell boys would be foolish enough to use oppo parts in their blu-ray player. Most of the people on this site put lexicon in the same boat as Krell...because of price tags..., but this is simply WRONG. Krell is bold enough to stick to their 15k price tag because the equipment IS actually TOP SHELF. It's a shame that lesser companies, such as Lexicon, have to embarass themselves by releasing a blu-ray player IDENTICAL to the $500 Oppo unit...

Thats why the BEST audio investment is power amps and speakers! They never go out of style!

Actually I did get a good deal on the G08 ... Personally a digital player over 5k is too much ....I really liked Krell when they (at least the monos I heard) were black ... Ive demoed Lexicon (MC12B ) very unimpressed , no realt different than my Parasound at the time..but 15K for a blu player is otta hand , just like a 15K CDP...Before the Meridian I had a Granite 657 Tube out CDP.. And in reality that and the Meridian are very very close ...Along with an ARC CD7 ....The only CDP I really really liked is the DCS Puccini ...You have a Great Speaker you will never loose your money on PBN ..
