Yes, the first movie has been restored through Lowry Digital and should be released later this year. Apparently, they had to wait for Cameron's approval but he was busy with Avatar.

hoping for the best with this transfer-- Terminator has never really looked very good (even in the theatre)-- will Lowry create more magic?

While I do hope for a killer HD picture, I am more concerned with them killing the look and feel of the film. It has to keep some of that dark and gritty feel. And yes, that means keeping the grain.

If they clean and brighten this thing too much then you cross boundries and end up with "The Terminator of Oz".

"I'll be back for you, my pretty. And your unborn son, too!"

I wonder if they going to fix a few "bugs" in Terminator.
Like deleting a few strings used for FX (very noticeable) and head of a dude who's pushing the level so that terminator is getting up in a scene after explosion.
Also I think during the police shootout due to editing mistake Arnie's shotgun sometimes sounds like his machinegun or vice versa.

Termator 2: Skynet Edition is the remaster. This thread was made in 2007 when it wasn't out yet.

I can't wait for the Terminator: Skynet Edition (if that's what it's called)!

Skynet is not a remaster, it's a tweaking of the old master (for the worse).

That's debatable to say the least. I thought the first release was fine and found the extra supplements/versions well worth the upgrade.

As for the first Terminator (and to that effect the Third) I would only justify a double dip on BD if they received the same treatment T2:Skynet received, until then I good with the current versions.

Well, that its not a new master is hardly debatable, many comparisons have been performed on various sites and revealed it to be mostly identical. Whether the tweaks are for the worse will depend on your stance towards DNR since they glossed it up a bit.

Speaking of The Terminator, consider this Rumor Mill worthy, but our industry sources have confirmed to us once again that we're likely to see a new Terminator: Special Edition arrive on Blu-ray this year, possibly tied to the release of James Cameron's Avatar.

I heard all the negativity associated with the first release of T2 on blu-ray so I passed up on that. T2 Skynet edition looks great to me; the only problem I could see anyone having might be with the loading time, internet connection, and the need for a memory card for those without adequete internal memory on their blu-ray players. The sound and picture quality of T2 Skynet edition is excellent.

I have not listened to the 'original' audio track on T1 for many years, but isnt the whole 'gun sound change' issue only on the 5.1 mixes? The Region 1 dvd has the original audio track included doesn't it? if the sounds are 'wrong' on the original track, I say leave it like that, otherwise you'll forever be getting people asking for the 'untouched, original audio' (like me ).

I also say leave in goofs... BD isnt a 'go back and correct mistakes' platform, its more 'original display' thing IMO.

So why did ridley scott use CGI to do touch ups on both alien and blade runner. Listen i'm fine with directors doing little touch ups here and there as long as it remains subtle and doesn't mess with the orginal effect too much like the star wars special editions.

Ridley didn't do anything to the original versions of both Alien and Blade Runner.

That was Ridley Scott's choice. Just because he did that with Blade Runner and George Lucas tinkered with Star Wars do you think it's perfectly acceptable for any studio to just change a movie to what they think it should look like now when ever they do a re-master or do a Blu-ray transfer of an older movie?
