There has been some question as to whether or not seamless branching would work with this title both because of the cuts and additions involved, the technical aspects of using the feature on such long films, and apparent issues with using the feature well and easily with VC1. I don't know how much of this is fact or was fact when the topic first came up, but if seamless branching would not work or WB wasn't willing or able to go to the effort, it means that there pretty much was always going to be two releases. Now, as to why they wouldn't just include both versions on separate discs in a single release if that were the case, that's another issue entirely.

Sorry Grand Bob, couldn't resist! They'll be sitting on my shelf too, as long as this release is $50- the day it hits!

and Seamless branching is NOT a good idea for these flicks. The way the movies were recut they would need to be re-scored etc.. they tried this with the flipper discs that had both cuts on them on DVD, the sound was badly botched because of the insertion or scenes with audio that was re-cycled or didn't match well.
That gives me a scary thought. Could you imagine after the long long wait, fans finally have the ability to purchase the EE. However the EE are released as flipper discs? I think that would cheese off a lot of people

Ha! $50 - that would be great; it'd be like busting the window and stealing them!

Actually, if it was done properly, it would work fine (not taking into account the disc space factor). Seamless branching doesn't just have to insert a scene here and there. If a scene is altered, then both cuts of the entire scene can be put on disc, so any re-scoring or audio isn't affected. It just branches to the complete scene, not just pieces of it. Problem solved.

I just got a $25 Amazon gift certificate (for using my Amazon Visa), so put toward this box set, each disc will average $13.33 each. Count me in!

There will be 3 BD's and 3 DVD's in the set. The feature films will be on the BD's and the special features for each will be on the DVD's.

If accurate, that sucks because some of those special features were filmed in HD.

Amazon is probably the best place but of course go with whoever has them the cheapest.

Some of the in-depth programs (ex: Welcome to Middle Earth, the National Geographic special, etc.), the exclusive 10-minute previews, theatrical trailers, and some of the featurettes.

I'll pay $22 per movie for the EXTENDED versions, but I wouldn't pay $0.22 cents for these theatrical ones
