If you haven't seen them at all yet, rent the dvds of both versions and make an informed decision.

No need to waste $60+ and not be pleased with the films

Welcome to the site btw.

It's not like you watch LOTR every day...

BTW, after watching my DVD copies of the extended cuts, despite the fact that I love these versions of the films more than the theatrical by far, I don't think I'll be able to watch the DVDs ever again. The MPEG artifacting is horrendous after a steady diet of pristine 1080p blu-ray.

Please oh please bring the EEs to us on Blu!

Blind buy? Definitely but watch the theatricals first. Once you get a feel for the trilogy, then go extended. Some feel they are too long but I don't mind them.

Aren't the theatrical versions three hours? How long are the extended versions? lol

I think I will just go ahead and get the theatrical versions then get the extended version later on.

So I have one question. I have heard alot about the LOTR trilogy only being the theatrical verions, and not the extended. I was at amazon looking at the reviews for this box set and everyone is giving it one star reviews and saying that they are not buying it, because the extended versions are alot better.

Now me being someone who has never seen these films and want too, (especially now they are on bluray) will it be worth it for me to preorder the trilogy now, or just wait for the extended versions? Even when the extended versions coming out next year.

So do you guys think it would be worth it for me?
The people giving the trilogy box set 1 star reviews on Amazon are probably the typical people that give things 1 star reviews on Amazon long before they are even out for one stupid reason or another, which is why Amazon shouldn't allow reviews for things before they are even out.

Anyways, I think you would be safe with the theatrical versions of the movies if you've never seen them before. The movies were really highly rated when they came out in theaters, so they had to do something right when they made those versions. If you are really sure you will enjoy these movies, then I don't see anything wrong with buying them.

I actually emailled Amazon complaining about this. I have seen it enough to be completely sick of it. People are certainly allowed to dislike the idea of the release and all of that, but reviewing a product that hasn't yet been released or reviewing a product you've never used just because you have some personal issue with it is inappropriate. If more people skipped the generally ignored inappropriate review reporting button and started taking up CS's time with email complaints, perhaps they might actually do something about it.

Chris

All three together work out to about eleven and a half hours. I wish they were longer.

You're right, in fact I rarely watch them at all.

When I DO watch them, I don't need a 4+ hour version.

Like I said, I just don't have that kind of time.

Personal decision, that's all.

Agreed - I sold off all my DVDs including these. The exceptions being TV shows I have which will never get released on BD.

You will be able to enjoy them and decide if you also want to see the EE versions. They won't be out for some time anyway.

That's what I am going to do.

Hmm..I still want to hold out until the EE's but I probably won't be able to resist. I'm not happy that the special features are in SD but I'm not surprised either.

So do other people (not including myself), but that hasn't stopped them from being the #1 studio. Just saying.

With everything coming out in March (including games), I may have to hold off on buying this trilogy right away, but I'm still getting it for sure. We'll see.

Really??

They are one of the most consistent companies producing BD's. They rarely put out awful releases and are the best at bringing out catalogue titles with great transfers.

If WB could release lossless audio consistently on all titles, including "TV" product, I'd be their biggest fan.

Then you must think every movie studio sucks because they've all pulled various shenanigans over the years.
