Default EB/GS not getting enough PS3s to fill preorders

http://www.gamespot.com/news/6161580...stnews;title;0

Quote:
Retailer's launch allocations not expected to cover original batch of reservations; employees "asked" to wait until second shipment to buy systems.
By Brendan Sinclair, GameSpot
Posted Nov 13, 2006 12:28 pm PT

Last month, retailer GameStop began accepting "limited" preorders for the PlayStation 3, asking customers to put down $100 in advance for the system, with a modest expectation of eight units per store in most cases. Now it appears the largest gaming specialty chain in North America won't be receiving even that many systems.

A GameStop representative told GameSpot today that the company received launch allocation numbers from Sony, and that it won't be able to fill its existing PS3 preorders. The representative declined to comment on how many systems GameStop expected to receive, or how short of that figure the company's share of systems would be.

"We are beginning to notify our customers that our initial shipment of PS3 systems will not be what we expected," the representative said. "As this is not an ideal situation, we are asking employees to wait to purchase systems until the second shipment. We are anticipating having systems to cover reservations before Christmas."

For launch day, preorders will be filled in the order they were received, and those who had a preorder but are denied a system on day one will receive something for their troubles. GameStop will give those unfortunate customers (as well as unfortunate employees) a free used game or DVD valued at $19.99 or less when they eventually wind up purchasing the system.

Those who reserved a system won't need to wait long to find out if they can expect a system on launch day. Starting tomorrow, customers who preordered a PS3 will be contacted personally by phone and updated on the status of their reservation, the rep said.

And while it might be a nonissue considering the clamor for consumers to get their hands on the coveted systems, GameStop is also asking anyone with a confirmed preorder to pick their systems up by Saturday evening.
Naturally this is being blown way out of proportion by MS and HD-DVD types.

I made it. I just got the phone call. I was the 4th preorder and that's where the line got drawn for us.

FWIW, they feel pretty confident that the rest of the preorders will be fulfilled within the next week or so. That's what they've been told anyways.

Sony, like MS a year ago, just couldn't quite crunch it all out at once. It's going to be staggered and scattered, but they were told that Sony expects to ship at least once, if not several times each subsequent week, so hopefully this "shortage" will not last for too long and the preorder folks should be taken care of within a week or two maximum after launch day.

They are only getting 60 percent of the preorders.

GameStop and its EB Games retail outlets will be receiving fewer PS3s than expected because an undisclosed number of PS3s originally slated to go to the US are being redirected to Japan due to the high demand there.

Meanwhile, Toys "R" Us has confirmed that it will have enough units to fulfill all of its PS3 pre-orders.

I got my phone calls, and I'm getting my pre-orders although one of them will be a 20GB instead of the premium I ordered. I'll use my $20 credit to purchase a game there.

And that's all I ever intended to do is get a free PS3 and maybe a couple games and accessories... I can't control what happens after that.

I think I know why this happened to Gamespot. All the preorders available on Ebay may have stirred Sony worng and made them cut the amount. I saw allocation amount compared to the amount of gamespot/EB/software etc stores exist. If they all get 16 consoles, that means that Gamespot is only beign allocated 40,000 out of 400,000 that are supposed to ship by Friday. Thats a small amount considering, thay are the biggest game store franchise around.

It also sucks since I was really looking forward to getting mine on Friday. I havent gotten the phone call yet but I dont consider that a positive thing yet.

The super big chain stores like Best Buy, Toys R Us, etc. logically are going to get the bulk of allotments, but this is just stupid.

It's not like EB/GS's were blowing out with big allotments in the first place.

Mine was a total of 8 and it got slashed down to 4? I barely made the cut!

LMAO! That makes the Ebay problem WORSE.

It doesn't make sense.

I got mine last night.

Even at that: I simply will not believe it until I have the PS3 physically here in my house.

FWIW, Sony continues to swear up and down that as soon as next week that these "shortages" are going to be covered fairly quickly.

They would be wise to make that happen.

They already are as early as yesterday. Personal phone calls from their stores are going out already.

Stopped by my EB this morning; it's not a mall shop but a stripmall location.

I was "#8 of 8" when I paid in full plus 3 games and extra controller when the preorder date hit. So I ask them about the Friday status based on the news that came out last night. The clerk indicated that he hadn't had a chance to call anyone yet but would be shortly and I was the first one to inquire of the 8 that preordered.

I got the info about waiting and getting the $20 towards a used game.

Asking about my position in it, since I was #8, I was told that they did not keep track of order #. all he has in front of him is the list of names, alphabetically. So it was entirely my choice, ensuring that I would get the 60gb model. I took advantage of being proactive by coming into the store and being the first to inquire by any means and said I want to make sure I get my preorder on Friday and that I'd rather not wait.

So, they open at 10am friday. I'll definitely be there waiting for it.

I called the local retailer where I put in my preorder (software etc). They told me, as far as they know they will not have the allocation cut. This is good news for me, but being the pessimistic person that I am, Im not expecting anything until Friday.

Dont know if anyone else said it but walmart is also not getting what they anticipated... ad states mininum 10 per store and they are going to be lucky to receive 1-2 per store now... just a heads up, wont know for sure until the 16th on this but this call coming from the home office is bad news... so that means i will be unable to purchase one

recieved my phone call last night. Ill be in the second shipment. The store got 8/16 and I apparently was number 10. I thought i was 12 so at least thats better news. The employee only guaranteed the shipment before christmas but he believes it will arrive "way before then" and somewhere between 1-3 weeks.
