what of freedom of speach? I understand contracts can prevent you from telling secret of behind the scenes infor about a product or company, but can a contract prevent some one from stating thier opinion on a topic?

Hard to judge unless you know all the details in the contract. The retraction seemed obligated and maybe there is not much he can state in personal opinion on the 2 formats that potentially undermine future sales of Paramount products.

I am sorry...but Bay flip-flops too much for my tastes. I'll certainly buy Transformers when it comes out on Blu, but Michael Bay has lost a lot of credibility in my book.

Probably yes. There can be a clause that forbids Bay from publicly criticizing the movie in any shape or form (movie, home media, whatever). When he said he's upset because TF is not on BD, that could have been be construed as a criticism on TF only being on DUD.

Maybe that's why he made a general comment this time, without mentioning TF at all.

Read between the lines Blu-fairy...I actually think there's a method to his madness.

Perhaps...but John Kerry probably had a method as well...it still made me suspicious to his agenda.

Of course...politicians always have an agenda. That's a given.

I still think Bay's a good guy at heart. I even imported The Island from UK (it cost me as much as four movies I paid last week for BOGO!). It was quite enjoyable.

Don't get me wrong...no matter which direction he may sway my opinion of him, that won't stop me from buying any of his movies that I may want on blu-ray.

A contract with a private company can prevent you from doing or saying *anything* that is not deemed excessive.

Freedom of Speech restricts the government, and ONLY the government, from stopping you from saying or writing things. Private companies, land owners, or your friend's Mom can make you stop saying things and the first amendment has nothing to do with it.

Given the timing of this statement, I wonder if Paramount's original deal with Michael Bay was to say "Hold off on the criticism till post TF release" instead of "Don't criticize HD-DVD".

I don't know if it was said before in this thread, but could it be that Bay's change of heart was due to the missing uncompressed soundtrack?

I wonder, if before the HD-DVD release, paramount promised him everything would be alright. I.e. the sound and picture being up-to-par with HD.

It wasn't until shortly before the release (when the reviews started trickling in etc) that we started to find out it had a DD 5.1+ soundtrack and not an uncompressed soundtrack due to bandwidth/space limitations.

I think I, as a director, would be ticked off as well. He obviously wants the best for his movies, and I think the lack of the uncompressed and/or true-HD sound track is a huge blow to HD.

190,000 sold on HD DVD? That is very impressive. Looks like they will win the week. But it is only one week. No biggie. Just think, BD outsells a minimum of 2:1. Blu-ray could have sold 380,000 - 400,000 EASILY.

400,000 @ $30 per movie = $12,000,000.
At this rate, by the end of next year, will $150,000,000 have made Paramount any money, or just help them break even?

I'm sure Mr. Bay will be happy to know that people who "support" Blu-ray still went out and bought his movie on dud.

Dunno - maybe he will be happier thinking that some of us share his passion for excellence, and will wait for the BD version.

How come any and every Transformers thread turns into "who wins Transformers week"? If I remember right, Bay said that understood HD DVD when he watched 300 (seems iffy to me because Paramount I doubt would use a Warner movie to promote itself). With 300's PCM track, I am sure it sounded great. When he finally put in HIS movie with its DD+ track, he was disappointed. He thought he would be able to have top notch releases. Instead of High Definition DVD, he got More Expensive DVD.
