Default Tree Of Life (2011)

Official Site (Coming Soon)

Trailer (Coming Soon)
Synopsis:
Quote:
Coming Soon

UPDATES:

Quote:
We know very little about Terrence Malick’s new film Tree of Life, said to be a generational family drama. We know it stars Brad Pitt as part of the film’s elder generation, and Sean Penn as the adult version of Pitt’s son. Beyond that, plot details are sketchy as Malick’s team has been very good about scrubbing them from the web. Not so sketchy that you can’t find them if you really want, but I’d rather leave all that as a mystery. Feel like I know too much already.

Various theoretical release dates have been batted around since the film was pushed back from a late 2009 release. We’ve figured it would premiere at Cannes, and while that debut isn’t yet confirmed, it seems almost a lock now. Apparition’s Bob Berney has been talking up the film, and confirming that an early November release is currently planned for North America. There’s not much here, but for those dying for this movie (like me), is is something.

Peter Hammond is reporting a few small details about the film that come by way of Berney, i.e. the guy releasing the film. So take them with a certain informed caution, since the guy has a vested interest. These details are small and verging on hearsay, but bear with me. It’s a slowish news day, and this is a movie about which I know a lot of people are keen to know more.

Berney said at the Independent Spirit awards that Tree of Life would see release in the beginning of November, and is “very likely to show up in Cannes.” (Emphasis on ‘very’ is Hammond, not me.) He’d previously given that November date to Anne Thompson as well.

Hammond reports that Berney says Tree of Life is “like a dream and Malick fans are going to be extremely happy.” Berney compares Brad Pitt to Robert De Niro in This Boy’s Life, which is not really what I expected to hear. He also highlights Jessica Chastain, who plays Pitt’s wife, as a performer to watch out for.

Like I said, scant new details. Is there any trailer I want to see more than this one? Nope. Not even Scott Pilgrim.

The plot is being kept under wraps for the moment but the main plot is supposed to be about delusioned adult (Sean Penn) reflecting on his past and Malick is rumored to do something extraordinary. Funny thing is, Sean Penn isn't being billed as the lead and he shares no scenes with Brad. So for those excited to see the two together, wait a little longer.

The effect artist has confirmed there will be 3 versions of the movie. A shorter Imax version, a longer theatrical version and maybe another theatrical version which is different than both versions.

It was due for a release last year but was delayed for more time on post production but it is very likely it'll come out this year seeing how Malick is already prepping his next project and has already casted it.

Disillusioned, not delusioned

There've been no other confirmations regarding the film except the cast and crew and the general plot of a boy who grows up disillusioned. That's all.

I'm aware of that empire article but it's not confirmation of anything--it's from March of last year. There also won't be any news regarding the film anytime soon. There's a reason why very little has been mentioned regarding the film since March of last year. I wouldn't expect any news until very late this year, when a release date is potentially confirmed. However, the film isn't even confirmed for this year. Malick quite possibly could continue editing through the end of this year, we just don't know.
It's truee. I just made a thread about it but other rumors are stating that Tree of Life is the resurrection of Q. The fact there's so much mystery behind this film makes it exciting. I just saw Days of Heaven last night and I thought it was great. And Malick casted my 2nd all time favorite actor in Tree of Life.

Also note that nothing has been confirmed, especially not three versions. The only thing that has been constantly mentioned is an imax film entitled Voyage of Time, based on his 1979 script Q. Tree of Life itself will likely deviate greatly from that original script. It's highly unlikely that Tree of Life itself will be in imax. It's also not confirmed that the film will even be released this year, although I suspect it will. If there's one thing I learned after studying Malick for years is that he'll only finish editing when he feels he's ready.

It will likely be very different than Q. That script has changed so many times in the past thirty years, it's not even funny!

Absolutely cannot wait for this, love Malick and this is long overdue. Hopefully this film will fare much better than the similarly-delayed The Road.

And that's why they delayed it. It was originally intended for last December but Malick wasn't finished. And I don't think Malick would move onto another project without finishing this.

Tree of Life is bound to deviate from that script for sure or else they would have already made Q if studios were willing. So I do agree with you on that but I have a feeling the central idea will be there. Malick is a genius and I don't think Tree of Life will be garbage.

I hope Malick is the man who gets Pitt his first Academy Award.

It won't be a major box office success--no Malick film is. However, Malick's films always generate buzz because of his small filmography and the quality of the four previous films. I don't think there'll be problems with the film itself due to the delay. Malick always spends at least a year editing, so I'm sure it's more of him nitpicking instead of an actual problem.

Well...Malick wasn't willing. That's why he disappeared into obscurity for 20 years. It didn't have to do with the studios. I think the movie will deviate significantly but Voyage of Time will keep the general idea of Q in check. Q was about a minotaur dreaming of the evolution of man. Highly unlikely that Tree of Life will mirror that in any way. But, we shall see.

I have a feeling it'll be treated like The Fountain but if it's getting the rumored Imax release and gets positive reviews expect it to generate a lot of buzz amongst crowds. And if that overrated nonsense called the Hurt Locker could catch everyone's attention then imagine what the positive press could do for Malick.

Thin Red Line was overshadowed by Saving Private Ryan at the time and A New World had the oddest release date and I don't see most people going to see a movie about Pocahontas in mid-January.

Possibly. Or maybe Malick has abandoned the idea of Voyage. I highly doubt the next one is Voyage because it's listed as a romance. Could deal with time travel. It's interesting, I like the casting of Bale but I'd prefer he used someone he hasn't used. To work with Malick is an honor. So he probably put combined all 3 projects. I have a feeling the people who are producing are very cooperative. It's been almost 2 years that this film is under production?

Definitely. Malick films are very unconventional to a mainstream audience. Days of Heaven is a very simple story but it is told through images and he sometimes doesn't even name his characters like The Farmer.

By catching everyone's attention, I assume you mean in an Oscar-related sense, and not the whopping "$18 million worldwide box-office gross"-sense.

This would be my most anticipated movie of the year, if I had any guarantee that it was coming out. I know it was originally set for 2008, and, well... here we are. It'll be ready when it's ready, and I'm fine with that.

Yeah that's what I mean. Didn't Children of Men start to do good at box office because of the good word of mouth from the press? I remember that's the reason I saw it, heard it was great and then I was like this movie is brilliant. At the time I didn't realize movies like this don't come often. Boy did 2008 prove me wrong lol.

I just like to mention that I made a mistake. Apparently the disillusioned adult is supposed to be Brad and Sean Penn is supposed to be his grown son? Narrator?

Totally makes sense. I'm not sure so please don't take my word for it.

Wrong. Brad Pitt is the father and Sean Penn is his son. Penn grows up to be the disillusioned adult.

Is it? I got fooled by an Ain't it cool Report.

How does it make Pitt the main character or the lead? Wouldn't Penn be the lead?

Most of those reports are speculative. The picture you posted at the top even shows Pitt as a father in the 50s. Penn is his son and is the disillusioned adult. This much I'm sure on, while many other things are not clear.

I wouldn't use wikipedia as a trustworthy source

Lol I actually read it on Ain't it Cool. Stupid site.

I was assuming that maybe Malick would have Pitt play a father who can't function right with his family because of childhood trauma and Jack tells the story of his father. I really prefer if Pitt was the lead rather then Penn.

I really need news on this film lol and it's probably my most anticipated film with Stone coming in second.

How much screentime each gets is debatable. The film is likely to involve both to a significant degree. Penn is a better actor, so I'd prefer him to have more screentime, but Pitt is def good as well and is starting to hit his stride a bit.

As for news on the film, you won't get any until the film has a set release date. People that work on Malick's films have to sign a release to not divulge information.

And your earlier post confuses what Voyage of Time is. You wondered why this would be his next film when imdb has another one listed. The reason is because it's not a feature film--it's an experimental documentary about the evolution of the world, with a lot of nature photography. It will likely be released concurrently with Tree of Life.

Either way, like you I'm stoked for the release, whenever it may be. It will be years before another film is released by him, regardless of what imdb says. Don't expect another for at least three years.

It's not what Imdb says though. Comingsoon confirmed Christian Bale, Javier Bardem and Rachel McAdams have all signed on to Malick's untitled romance movie.

And where would Terrence get time to make that documentary?
