On Monday Shutter Island remained strong @ #1. The surprise, well, it is not all that surprising is that Avatar finish #4, but just $ 29,699 away from #2 .

The Crazies is the only one of the top 5 that dropped (4.5%). Avatar had the second biggest climb, Valentine's Day went up by 24%.

Finally found some 3D theater numbers:

Tim Burton's new film hits theaters all across the country this weekend and it has already set a record, two days before its release. Variety is reporting that Alice in Wonderland will set a new record when it is released in 2,242 3D screens this weekend.

The mark eclipses Avatar's debut on 2,032 3D screens, which accounted for 59% of the total screen count of 3,452. Alice in Wonderland's 2,242 3D screen count accounts for 60% of its total 3,728 screen count. It was also said that there are currently around 3,400 3D screens in North America, and Alice in Wonderland will occupy 66% of those screens when it opens this weekend.

There are more 3D films coming out in the near future, though, with DreamWorks Animation's How to Train Your Dragon hitting theaters on March 26 and the Sam Worthington action film Clash of the Titans arriving in 3D the next weekend, April 2.

Appears to be a safe assumption. As you posted above Avatar lost almost 300 screens and all of those are probably 3D...that will hurt. However, it is Oscar weekend and Avatar will get a big push. The Blue guys could surprise with a#2 showing.

Also, the total counts are for THEATERS, not SCREENS. So that % of total screens is off by quite a bit for both movies.

For example, one theater in New Orleans is playing it in all three formats, IMAX, RealD, and 2D. But that is just 1 in the 3,728 for Alice, not 3.

Dude thats not how they count the release numbers. I know because I have been on the inside of the business. The numbers are actually per screen.

They also do have a a different set of number for Theaters as well. In order to find out how much a film makes it takes the number of the Screens its being played in and how many seats per screen and then finally the Company's name and how many theaters the company owns.

The 3,452 number for Avatar is in fact its THEATER count, not its SCREEN count. Its SCREEN count was around 7,000 when it opened.

The Dark Knight, released in 4,366 theaters, but was playing on over 9,000 screens.

Lets get this cleared, I think I may have misunderstood your comment if Theatrical counts is all what you are talking about. But if you are talking about the process in how to figure out the numbers then the equation starts with the Screen counts.

I was referring to the amount of theaters and screens the movie is on, not the money it makes.

Because the article mentions that Avatar was on 2,032 3D screens, which is over 50% of its 3,400 total screen count. Which is very very incorrect, since it was actually on over 7,000 screens.

The Screen counts and the percentage you are talking about are only limited to the North America's theaters only. Which is why its short of the actual (7000 +) numbers that its played in/continues to play.

The big budget 3D technopic was the widest 3D release to date: 2,023 3D runs of 3,452 North American theaters.

Thats why the numbers are confusing, or seems inaccurate.

I know that, I am trying to explain why it is confusing. I will give you a good example: When I managed a theater in Northern VA that theatre received 7 prints of Spiderman 2. 3 of the 7 were digital film. This is what happened over opening weekend all auditoriums were sold out (with the largest takes 800 people) and then we had an emergency management meeting during then in which we decided we could play the film in additional auditoriums to add revenues and profits. All we did was interconnect an additional 5 auditoriums playing the same movie and canceled out whatever previous movies that weren't doing well. So instead of having 7 auditoriums playing Spidey 2 we ended up with 12 auditoriums playing the movie.

This could have and most likely did happen with Avatar. Yes the numbers don't make sense because of such scenarios. So the link you gave me is Accurate in a sense because Avatar was supposed to be playing the way Home Office asked. This means the Article is accurate but inaccurate as well because they don't have the entire details.

So if Avatar is supposed to be on 7000 screens it may have actually played in more screens than that at the theaters in general.
