what gear do you have currently that you want to be able to use with this "new" receiver? i.e. cable box, blu-ray player. also, does the receiver you currently own have multichannel inputs and does it support component video in & out? if it does, you could save a little money by just getting a player that decodes onboard and go analog out that way you could still enjoy lossless audio and if the receiver supported component in & out you could still get at least 720p/1080i. if it has digital spdif or optical audio in then you could get an hd cable and get DD 5.1 audio & 720p/1080i video.

perhaps that could hold you over until you save for bigger & better things. of course, this all hinges on what the current receiver can do/accept.
