Plus few films can be truly like looking out a window as they are 2D (unless you can't perceive depth).

(i didn't read all of this thread)

i DON'T like grain at all ! if its used for an "effect", fine. but if the whole movie is grainy = poor workmanship imo.

And add blurred focus and fake grain as well. He missed my point.

What I've noticed is that a fine layer of grain can actually make a picture appear "sharper" as opposed to a grain-free image (especially when in motion). I've added a fine layer of moving grain with home videos I've made since my Canon HD camera provides too clean of an image. My Canon HD cam does some sort of internal DNR that I can't stand.

Now, grain that is excessive looks like crap unless it is black and white film.

A good example fot the right amount of grain is Dr. No. I heard the grain was "put" on there by Lowry after they cleaned up the original image.

I'd like to know which movies you think are unintentionally grainy as a result of poor workmanship.

I love these threads cause they can go on forever.

My point is i would be happy if every movie (yes a movie not a film or whatever the stuckup term is) looked like WALL-E or any Pixar movie as opposed to how gladiator or 300 look.

I dont like grain....you do.
I like the cowboys....you dont.

See....endless.

You are right...thanks for keeping it civil.

I am surprised though that you like WALL:E because a lot of the early scenes were very grainy (artificial and intentional) and it really has that rugged look.

Why would I want grain in movies if I am buying movies that are $10+ more to watch them in HD?

HD stands for High Definition.

Preserving grain also means that you preserve fine detail, DNR "scrubs" detail and ultimately defeating the purpose of HD.

Grain = HD and detail
Removed grain = Lower definition reduced detail

Yep, its that simple.

The term "HD" is not synonymous with "grain-free." That's like saying why would I want movies in black and white when I paid money for a color tv?

If a movie was shot on film, it has film grain.

I do NOT like grain at all. However, I respect those of you who do and see why you feel that way. As was stated earlier, this topic is one that could on forever. It comes down to personal preference. If the grain in a movie is subtle I can handle it but when there is tons of grain and it makes it look like noise that is what I can't stand.

No. HD will have less compression artifacts.

You've got it backwards dude, the added resolution means that you can see more, meaning that grain has always been there, you can't really see that on dvd's because... well it would be in a lower resolution.
HD means you can see much more detail, as a "by-product" of that grain comes out of hiding.

That is an incorrect assumption. If a movie had film grain when it was shot, HD is not going to lessen that.

Certain films call for grain. It just depends on the movie really. I watched the Mist the other day and it makes me unhappy then they look in the sky and it looks bad.
