Yep. A little more fine detail and richer color. The difference in sound, however, will be more than a little better.

I do want to say one thing, even if the reviewers here already have their screeners in hand, it may be awhile for a review since these films are so long and the reviewers no doubt have other priorities as well.

I think they're gonna review them as quickly as possible, this is probably the highest profile release ever and don't you think Blu-ray.com would want to be the first to have a review?

I overlayed them on top of each other and switched back and forth. They are real close, but I agree with you.

Ok...now looking at these comparisons, the BD shows Bilbo with sharper looking hair however...the HDTV ones have MORE detail in Bilbo's face which then unfortunately means DNR has been applied to the BDs giving the face a slightly more waxy look...correct???

Well the hair is much sharper in the BD one but it also has less detail in the face which has a slightly waxier look to it that I am guessing is from DNR.

His cheeks and mouth look a tiny bit better on the HDTV one (detail wise) but his nose/forehead looks better on the blu-ray to me.

To even tell that much difference though I had to get my face right up close to the monitor (19inch 1440x900 resolution with 1000:1 contrast ratio). Sitting normal distance back (about 3 feet from the screen) they look the same except for the better color on the BD.

Edit: Actually, the BD looks better from normal distance.

On the BD one his pores and five-o'clock shadow disappear from to lower portion of his face such as right above his lip and the darker part of his face also.

That's what I meant by look better (in those areas)

But like I said, I had to get right up to the screen to even be able to tell.

On another note, I wish we could get some caps from the blu of TT. The TT shots have all been from "other sources" so far

The BD looks better. I notice more clarity in most of the image, and the colors looks sharper.

I finally looked at the background of both images and it appears that the film grain has been removed from the BD version also.

SPR was shot to look exceedingly grainiy, at times like someone was carrying around an old camera following the action. LOTR was not filmed this way. People are getting up in arms over nothing, shouting at the heavens for no reason.

Those TTT shots look awesome to me. There's probably some DNR at work, but that's still more detail than I can ever remember seeing in that movie (the theatrical print was very soft when I saw it).

I think I'll be picking this up (I've kind of been going back and forth on this lol). I'm very pleased with all the shots from TTT and RotK, and mildly dissapointed with FotR. That's still enough goodness for me to give in.
