No it will use the existing HDMI cable. It's still supposed to work with the new 3D tech with just an update. Don't ask me how. I have to see this before I believe it.

Either a wire is crossed inside or the PS3 isn't off when you think it is.

Why? You'll still have to shell out $3000 for a 3D TV.

HDMI 1.3 spec has the necessary bandwidth so it follows that the same grade of cable is capable too.

The software upgrade has more to do with how the frames are organised and packed for compatible HDMI transmission to any make of TV also supporting the S3D part of the HDMI 1.4 spec.

Full 1080p to each eye can pass through any 10.2 gbps HDMI cord.
However, if you have an audio receiver, it will cause handshake issues ife 3-D Mode is engaged.

What this means for most people is that in the case of the PS3 you will have to hook the HDMI up directly to the 3-D television to get the 3-D signal to work, or buy a new receiver that handles 3-D video content, extracts the audio and passes it through.

In short, if you have a surround sound system, you will have to use Optical digital for audio, since the HDMI will need to connect directly to the TV or get a new receiver that supports 3-D video passthrough.

All that HDMi 1.4 adds is an audio return channel, and some internet capabilities that won't come into play for quite some time. It's not terribly exciting.

Is "3D" passthrough different than regular passthrough?

Let's hope Sony can do the update and also find a way nto to cause a handshake issue. who wants to go out an buy a new receiver
