Ya, open them up. I only buy ones of movies that I like and then watch them. Although it is really annoying when you start to see the flaws in them.

Funny how I see the OCD group, as you call it, presenting opinions and other information, but leaving the OP free to make his own call about them without any pressure, maybe some humour, to pick one side or the other, but your opinion has to be screamed, virtually, at the top of your lungs ...... maybe it is not the OCD completist sealed collectors who are on the dark side of the force.

Just my $0.02 and my opinion

Cheers

It all depends on what your collecting them for. If you just want a cool case for movies you like then by all means open them and watch them. If you are collecting them for resale or as collectors items then i would be more wary about opening them. Ultimitaly it is your call.

Only you can decide what kind of collector you want to be. If you have the funds, and you want to enjoy them sealed and pick up the amaray to watch, then so be it. There are some SteelBooks that command a premium now, and if they are sealed, they will command a higher premium. There is a good chance that they will continue to be worth something in the future, but there is also a chance that they could be worth a little more than an amaray release in the future.

If you are not overly concerned about future value, you don't like the idea of double dipping just to enjoy a movie in your collection, you want to enjoy the artwork firsthand on the inside as well as the outside, and you don't see them as investments, then open them up and enjoy the movie. I'm mainly on the open camp because I would rather enjoy the movie and/or the artwork inside them. I do have some still sealed, and I'll eventually open them up or find a mint open copy to have a sealed one for trade.

As for your question on Clone Wars, the one on Ebay for $130 has been there since shortly after it's release, and I don't think that one is worth near that much. I'm sure with patience, you will be able to find it for half that amount, or find someone willing to trade it for something.

Either way, welcome to the club, and good luck with whatever you decide!

I've been following my own rules for a couple years now...which is why i have a small collection:

- Only get movies I want. had no desire to see angels and demons, so I easily passed on that one.
- No foreign language anywhere on the case(inserts/back paper doesn't count). i don't care how nice it looks...if I cant read it, i won't own it.
- I generally try to just stay within the US and Canada for the simple fact that i don't like the big numbers the UK and Germany put on the fronts(is it the ratings/PAL thing I guess?)...it totally ruins the look for me. Only one I own from the UK is Daredevil Definitive Edition.

Always the voice of reason. As for the OCD group moniker, I meant no disrespect to either Crash or Tiger. My hat goes off to both Canadian gurus.

+1. I only buy them for titles that I like. It saves me some money in the long run.

Open or don't open depends on why you're buying them.

I open all of mine, I also sell off the non-steel titles they are replacing in my collection to friends to offset some of the cost.

To the OP:

I think every collection should be unique.

Don't go by what others think is a collection cos if you're not happy with it; its their collection and not yours.

Feel free to buy what you want, when you want.
Its the memories associated with steelbooks (how you got them , where you got them from, whom you got them from, whom you sold them to and see it change owners and travel around the globe etc.) that makes them worth collecting.

Yes I'm passionate about steelbooks as you can see.

If Scanavo were to put out an alternate exact copy of each Steelbook, but containing no movie and at half the price of a regular Steelbook, would you buy them and keep them as collectibles? If they are never going to be opened, what's the difference?

There is a difference for sure as the empty case would be incomplete. Would be like having a first run Darth Vader action figure, but his light saber was missing

Is it just me or does that sound obscene?

The same thing happened to John Bobbitt.

No, actually, comet is right, and part of the reason for the reference was that I knew the comet would come swooping down and start wagging his tail all over the place

You can always count on the comet

To OP; As many have already said, only you can decide your steelbook's fates. I myself bought steelbooks years ago for the novelty of having Iron Man (albeit on DVD) in a metal case.. then Dark Knight followed cause of prestige. Both were opened cause they were the only copies I had and thought these things were more prolific than Futureshop alone. Little did I know though.

It's hard coming into this scene so far in the game, there is much to learn and history to read up on, but be patient and think before opening any is my suggestion. I kind of side with Crash and Tiger if you haven't already guessed. I have a collection of about 80 BD's (many multiples) and only 4 are open.

Either way, welcome to the scene. Trading partners are always needed.
